Hey, a friend of mine is applying next year. She's black and she asked me if I knew of any schools outside of the historically black schools that recruit minority applicants.

I told her that I wasn't sure. I thought maybe Michigan or maybe Temple.

Does anybody have know?

I think most schools have programs for the recruitment of minority applicants. Specifically, I think Georgetown has a program for minority applicants called GEM. I don't know anything about it.

Stanford, I believe has a seperate committee for minority applicants, I could be wrong.

Michigan State
UCLA
Drew/UCLA Medical Education Program
UCSF
Kansas
Keck-USC

Many medical schools are currently looking for black applicants.

I think other than U-Washington, all medical schools practice racial preferences of some sort or another.

how come asian students are not considered a minority?

i understand for colleges since there is a large percentage of asians...
however, from what i hear, there aren't THAT many asians at med schools... maybe 5% or so, if you're lucky...
i guess that depends on the specific school as well...

but if blacks are considered minorities, does that mean that there are less blacks than asians enrolled in med schools???

hmmmm....

or is it just that there are less percentage of blacks who apply to med schools?

Just curious, I thought California outlawed affirmative action due to proposition 209. Wouldn't this be affirmative action? Or are medical schools excepted somehow.

Think there will ever be a over-worked, underpaied, above average caucasion with family thing. At the risk of sounding racist here, it seems the white population is doing everything in its power to thwart themselves and advance others. I mean, here at UTSA, we are celebrating Mexico's independence from Spain. But being in the icity of one the most remembered battles for Texas' independence, we can't celebrate that day because it might offend Mexicans/hispanics here in San Antonio. What the hell is that all about. Sorry to get off topic, just tired of busting my ass for myself and not getting as much as others who don't.

Some of us might take exception to that comment. You think anyone getting into medical school hasn't busted his/her own butt?

If you have a problem, post it elsewhere. Don't coop this thread with that crap.
T

To the OP, Baylor has a great student affairs office that can answer a bunch of questions for your friend.

For anyone curious it's March 6, 1836. Not many Texas tend to know this date. Oh and the Mexicans actually won that battle.. by a landslide.

Didn't take long for this thread to transform into another aa thread. 🙄

kgal, asians are considered a minority....however, they are not considered an UNDERREPRESENTED minority. So, many programs that specify minority recruitment, include Asians. Ones that specify URM, will not include Asians.

There are definitely more Asians than Blacks/URM hispanics in medical school...this is both because of a smaller application pool but a slightly lower acceptance rate as well.

And I agree didn't take long for this thread to transform...geesh

Being a minority probably helps your chances of admission at just about any medical school. If you check out mdapplicants.com I think it'll quickly become obvious that URM's generally get offered tons of interviews, even if they have subpar stats. I really don't think it's worth the effort to look up programs specifically targeted at URM's, since adcoms already automatically give them an advantage.

AA is bull****. There I said it.

I know a number of ethnic-Indians who were born and raised in countries like Zambia, Kenya, South Africa, etc.

Are they African-American? 😀

It must be tough going through life so bitter.

For real...why can't people just hit "post reply" and provide an answer to the question asked by the OP and be on their merry way?🙄 🙄 🙄

It seems everyone has an issue and they use every chance to post about it...get a shrink.

All schools can use race as an admission factor, even though Cali & Texas outlawed it. The recent supreme court ruling reversed those laws. I have never heard of a school not using race/URM in the process, except Cali & Texas until the recent case.

Why does everybody tip-toe around AA? All schools considering race therefore discriminate against whites and asians to a small degree. There should be no confusion here. This is done in the name of the greater good.

It is BS for sure 😡

Actually I think the courst said that it could be used in admissions, not that it must be. So it doesn't reverse the policies in Texas and Cali, it merely says that if a school wanted to they could use race as an admission factor.

I don't think I said "it must be used." I said:

It most certainly does reverse the law in Texas (and I suspect Cali). Texas law said race could not be considered as a factor for college admissions. The supreme court decision reversed Texas law.
