Hey so I am trying to finalize my list of schools before submitting my AMCAS in a couple weeks and I was just wondering if anyone knew if any schools were friendly to applicants from Montana since there are no med schools here. I know about the Washington program but just wondering if anyone knew of any other schools that would pity a country bumkin such as myself.

Places like Creighton or MCW, since there are extremely few private schools in all of the west and midwest and they know they are likely to win applicants from these areas.

You live in Montana? I'm so sorry (obi wan voice from starwars 3)...

I believe UNR is, but you'd have to double check

You could just do the work and compete for a spot fairly like everyone else.

Any school friendly to OOS applicants is going to have an interest in a guy from Montana. You are a rarity and bring "geographic diversity" to the institution. In a discussion group full of people from big cities and their suburbs, it is good to have the viewpoint of someone who knows something about people living in more remote areas where transportation and small numbers of people spread over a large area becomes a big issue with regard to access to services.

Also, isn't rural medicine big these days?

U of Washington is your state school, for all intents and purposes. Google 'WWAMI'

you are also given admissions preference through WICHE, which means OHSU, UNR, UA, UNM, and UC should all be happy to get an application from you.

for a person without a state medical school, you're actually sitting pretty. I actually considered moving to Montana at one point when I was trying to figure out the admissions game.

Being from Montana is awesome.

Washington is friendly and I know Colorado takes a certain number of Montana residents a year (and treats them as IS). As someone mentioned as well, the WICHE schools may be similar but I only know for sure about the two I listed.

Some good options there.

And the state is gorgeous.

What's with all the Montana haters? I'd love to live there, for so many reasons... OP is lucky.

There is a program called WWAMI, which stands for Wyoming, Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho- the schools that don't have a med school apply to U Wash and get reduced tuition if they agree to return to their home state to practice. It requires that you have been a resident of one of these states for 5 years prior to applying. You have to apply for residency certification through your ppre med office before applying I'm pretty sure. You should go to your advisor and ask about this, I'm suprised you haven't heard about this.

I'm guessing this means that the OP previously knew about the WWAMI program. It's kind of a raw deal, though, since it puts some serious stipulations on you once you graduate.

As a Montana resident, you can essentially apply in-state to all of the WICHE schools: http://www.wiche.edu/psep/medi You have in-state access to more medical schools than Texas and California combined.

To prove that you are indeed a Montanan and qualify for all these WWAMI/WICHE goodies, you have to pass Laurie Tobol's application here: http://mus.edu/psep/

It isn't required that you come back to Montana at all. Forcing people to practice in Montana when they don't want to be here leads to a lousy doctor / patient experience. We would rather have doctors practice here by choice.

Washington and Oregon schools are Montana friendly.
