There are broke students out there who might be struggling with the costs of the primary & secondary application. As we know, the AMCAS provides a Fee Assistance Program (FAP) for those that could use some financial assistance with the process. The FAP waives the primary application fee for for 11 (or 12, can't remember) schools, and a number of schools will waive their secondary application fee as a result. The folks at AMCAS do not keep a list of schools that offer secondary application fee waivers and so it is up to us to create such a list and encourage others to apply who might have been initially turned off by the cost of applying. I am trying to compile a list of schools that DO & DO NOT waive the secondary application fee so that students who are struggling financially can re-consider their options. I need your assistance in adding to this list so please, after reviewing this list, please add schools that might be missing on this list, that did and did not waive your fee for your secondary application if you received the FAP. For schools that did not provide a fee waiver, it would be appreciated if you could also include the secondary application fee (please specify it the fee was reduced). Thanks.

From reading responses, it seems that most schools offer a secondary fee waiver and therefore, I shall start with a list of schools that do not offer the fee waiver.

SUNY Downstate, Wayne State take the AMCAS FAP.

Loma Linda doesn't.

For those of you who got the FAP, are you putting yourself as econ. disadv. on the AMCAS? How much of an impact do you think it has on admissions? Reading the MSAR I see that a lotta schools are "committed to diversity, including disadv. and URMs." Just curious to what extent that "economic disadvantage" matters.

I am econ dis, but that has little do with with my fee waiver status. Econ dis is about your life before you turned 18 (poverty level, food stamps, welfare, etc). Fee waiver is just about whether you are poor right now. I actually did quite well financially for a number of years (relatively speaking), but was quite poor last year since I went back to school. My family is dirt poor, so therefore I got the fee waiver.

Adding some more schools...

UPenn
Jefferson
Temple
Harvard (no way I'm getting in, but you gotta try!)

They all take the fee waiver.

Yeah I got FAP but I'm not putting down economically disadvantaged. I didn't feel like my family not making any significant amount of money hindered my education, but that really depends on you. It is a bit confusing though, they need to be more clear on who can use that Econ. Dis. option.

I think it's easier to list schools that do not waive secondary fees, than list the ones that do.

Thanks guys - lets keep the building the list up. I modified the body of my message and will try to include a list of schools in the first post based upon your suggestions. Who knows, maybe at some point the list gets long and someone might decide to Sticky it?

Medical University of South Carolina doesn't accept the FAP. I don't remember exactly how much the fee was, I think $75.
Based on info in the MSAR where it says whether schools have fee waivers or not, I thought the only schools I was applying to that wouldn't accept the FAP were MUSC and Tulane. However it turns out that East Carolina U does not accept FAP. they will give you a fee waiver only if you get a letter from your school's financial aid office saying that paying the fee would be a hardship. As I've already graduated and didn't want to delay my app, I just paid the fee ($60).

I just added more, but why don't you just check the MSAR book? All the schools list whether they do or do not accept the FAP fee waiver.🙂 It is on the second page for the school in the upper left hand corner.

you should probably get rid of the accepts FAP list, since the vast majority of schools accept them.

just keep it to who doesn't accept it.

Thanks guys
Let's keep building the list. Instead of copy pasting the entire list each time, if you spot a university/school that is missing on this list, please just mention that school. While it is true that it makes more sense to include only schools that do not accept the FAP, sometimes it is just nice to know whether a school you are considering applying to accepts it without a shadow of a doubt. Also, unfortunately, not everyone can afford to buy the MSAR so why not just make the list here. The response has been good and I wish someone would sticky the post for future purposes.

-University of Vermont also waives the fee
-I confirmed the $25 cost for UCincinnati

that's total BS. my parents make a crap ton, but i'm independent so what does that have to do with me.

arggh...😡
I hear ya, but I think the premise to including parents also takes into account ability to get decent loans. So if an independent applicant makes jack, he/she could take out more loans if they have a credit-worthy cosigner (aka parents). Other than that, it's actually impressive how generous they are (a 2 person household can pull in $41k and still get FAP assistance).

Hey guys, I didn't have time to read through all the posts, sorry if somone already mentioned this, but also remember that the list you are making is for schools that you put as the first 11 on the primaries (got the primary waived). Many of the schools on your list don't waive the secondary if they weren't listed as one of the schools you had the primary waived for. At the same time, a lot of them do waive the secondary regardless, if you got the FAP. It's been a while, but I remember that Penn and BU don't waive the secondary if you hadn't used the FAP for their primary. Good luck!

Ok, I think this would be more helpful, schools that waive the secondary if you got the FAP, even if they weren't listed as one of the 11 schools having the primary waived: Yale, Hopkins, Harvard, Emory, Dartmouth, VCU, UVA, Umich

😕 Are you referring to a previous application year?

At least with this year's cycle, FAP is a cover all. You apply to as many schools as you want and the AAMC cuts the cost of 12 schools (not 12 specific schools). The AAMC makes note on your application that simply says you qualified for FAP. When the schools receive your primary application, they make note that you are qualified for FAP and, in most cases, automatically waive the secondary fee. Most of the remaining schools just need a copy of the waiver, and a very small percentage charge you anyways.

Your FAP approval extends well beyond 12 schools when it comes to secondary applications.

i could totally qualify except for my dang rich parents that are contributing nothing, which has as much to do with me as with them.

Well, I applied last year, so I don't know if it has changed. I initially applied to about 10 schools and the primary was waived for all of them since I had the FAP. I added more schools later and had to pay the primary fee. There were places among the schools I had added later that didn't give me a waiver on the secondary because I hadn't specifically received a waiver on their primary- they said that I would have gotten a waiver if their system said that I received a waiver on their primary. Good luck !

aaah...well that makes sense. The whole AAMC FAP thing was revamped, including the cutoff (wasnt it at 200% of poverty level last year, instead of 300%?). Good thing too, it sounds like it was a huge hassle before!
