Hi everyone,

This is my first post on SDN but I have been a long time lurker for quite some time. I am coming up with a list of schools to apply to in a few months and would appreciate your insight on which schools I should add.

Here is some information about me:

cGPA: 3.66 MCAT: 514

- graduating early from a well-known university with strong science and pre-med departments
- member of honors college, completing an honors thesis that studies prejudicial behavior with a faculty member outside of my major
- pursuing a Spanish minor, have done very well in all Spanish courses and would consider myself proficient in reading, writing, speaking
- Volunteering: long-term and consistent volunteering at an affordable health clinic in my city for people who do not have insurance; long-term and consistent volunteering at a mental health therapeutic nursery in my city for children who grow up in poverty or have difficult lives at home. Both of these experiences have been very influential in my life. Also volunteered at a retirement home, we were supposed to just play bingo with them but I thought they needed more interaction so I made holiday cards and decorations and went door to door and delivered them as holidays arose.
- Leadership experience: I have lead freshman welcome week at my college for 2 years and have mentored freshman for 2 years. I was a committee member in my pre-health organization and the following year I became a member of the executive board.
- Research experience: I am a published author and am continuing to do research in another lab at my university. Our results were very good and are expected to be significant in the field. If we publish I will be named as an author.
- Shadowing experience: I have completed long term shadowing with both a family practice doctor (MD) and a pediatrician (DO); will continue looking for shadowing opportunities
- Work Experience: I worked in a restaurant my first year of college. Over the summer, I also worked at a care center for children with severe special needs.

Sorry I just realized that part got very long! My apologies in advance.

Anyway my school list so far: Touro CA, PCOM, Midwestern Chicago, NYITCOM, Kansas City University COM. Are there other schools I should consider or anything else I am missing? Thank you in advance!

Let me ask you something - why the hell are you applying to DO schools? Your application is outstanding for a large number of MD schools. Even if you didn't go to a top school (I'm assuming by well-known you mean top?), you'd be fine. The fact that your undergraduate school is a top school is going to add to the value of your application.

I'm going to give you some real advice here - actually, I'm telling you (not asking you) to get the idea of applying to DO schools out of your head. Apply early and broadly this upcoming cycle to MD schools, and you'll do very well, my friend. Good job. And you're welcome.

If you want to be a DO that’s fine and good. Just prepare yourself for PC. Apply broadly to MD schools if you want a path of least resistance to specialties.

Just to set the record straight, about half of my grads and at other COMs go into specialties. The PC numbers get higher with the older DO schools like KCOM, PCOM and CCOM.

But I agree that with stats like the OPs, I ordinarily advise them on what MD schools to aim for.

I am definitely planning on applying to MD schools as well. I was originally interested in DO schools because I want to pursue primary care and I like the philosophies that a lot of the schools seem to have. I guess there was also an element of under confidence on my part, thinking for some reason that most MD schools would not be interested in a student like myself. I know this is the DO forum but if you do have any advice on which MD schools to apply to, I would be grateful. My home state only has 1 public medical school so I have felt like my options are a bit limited.
