well ive been on here a couple of times and the forumn has helped me out tremendously. I had a dismal GPA and after every semester I would log on and get advice as to what to do. This has now taken me two whole years but i have repaired what I could from a low 2.0 GPA to a now 3.2 overall and 3.1 science except now I am ready to apply(i know its still not great but its a huge improvement). I will be sitting for the MCAT in june and getting my scored back in mid july. I hope that does not effect my chances at the few MD schools I will be applying too. I will be applying but notifying the schools of an MCAT score on the way. as of right now practice scored are in the high 20's with a few cracking the low 30's. I feel good about the exam and I just purchased ek verbal to help me out with my weakest section. Now im curious as to what schools I should be applying to. I am a NJ resident so the NJ schools are a must because you simply never know. so here are the stats and the schools I have been thinking about. I am not opposed to DO at all.
GPA-3.2 SciGPA-3.1 nonSci- 3.5 MCAT- will be in the thirties, just don't know where yet. but im not sitting for the exam till im hitting thirties consistently(been there 3 times already on practice exams).
extra curriculars= Chem tutor, substitute teacher, personal trainer, 400 hrs ER volunteering, shadowed pediatric cardiologist, shadowed nuerosurgeon(watched multiple procedures).

DO schools:
VCOM
WVCOM
PCOM
UMDNJ SOM
DMUCOM
NSUCOM
LECOM Bradenton
LECOM Erie
NYCOM
TOURO COM NY

MD schools:

Miller School of Medicine (Boca) everyone can dream right?
UMDNJ NJMS
UMDNJ RWJ
Tulane
Morehouse
Michigan State
EVMS
GWU
Meharry
Howard
U of SC
Albany
USUHS

Hoping this is a better list

those are 20 schools that I will be applying too(depending on MCAT score). what do you guys think? any other schools that I should definitly be applying too? im thinking im aiming too high with some of the FL schools but i kind of want out of NJ and my gpa for the past 2 years has been a 3.7 and there has been a tragic situation that caused the bad grades in the middle of my college career.

please look at the out of state admit rates for the florida schools before wasting your money. i say this as a friend. if i remember correctly, if you had a 3.5/35 from yale most schools in florida would be a stretch if your are not a resident, not a personal attack regarding your situation.

personally, i think that you should buy either us news or that admissions book amcas sells and look to apply to schools that have mean enrolled gpa/mcat that isn't crazy above your stats and that either are not crazy state selective (even pcom has a much lower admit rate for out of state then penna residents something like 5 vs 20%). think about chicago medical school, george washington, etc as good, private medical schools that award the MD but have slightly lower than average average admitted gpa/mcat.

I have been thinking of gwu as well. I understand that FL is extremely OOS undriendly (except for U miami) but my brother has lived in Boca for years and I have visited miami boca several times and made a face for myself there. I will continue to take classes and have looked at the MSAR( the book your refering too) but i havent looked at the schools with lower gpa/mcat scores but i will now do that ok I will revise the list. and i am not at all offended by your post either, and i still regard you as a friend lol.

ok updated it a bit

i have the 2006 data (i think) but it should generally hold...

u miami acceptance rate: in state, 19%, out 3.5%. Not exactly friendly.

consider yourself lucky with NJ though. i saw some instate acceptance rates close to 30! u of sc east coast accepts like 2% OOS. st. louis U is closer to 6-7% OOS and private. nymc might be a good one too. if you don't like drinking and love the sun, loma linda. west va is pretty oos friendly as well (almost 8%!).

I think I can be of help in your school selection for MD schools because I read through the Medical School Admission Requirements (MSAR) book yesterday.

It seems you just took all the schools that admit with the lowest gpa scores. This is probably the wrong approach because you may not identify with the schools mission statements and gpa would be irrelevant. Obviously USUHS will be less accepting of civilians than of uniformed servicemen so that significantly lowers your chances there. Also, Morehouse and Howard are historically black medical schools and 95% of the acceptees are African American. If this includes you then you probably have a better shot at them.

As for DO schools, just check the curriculum requirements to make sure you have met them. Sounds like your on track though with the MCAT so best of luck.

hmm i did look for lower gpa requirments because do have a lower GPA. i am not against applying to the african american schools because i dont mind african americans and I would be of the minority. your right tho it doesnt mean that i will be the right fit for the school but i don't exactly have options here.
