Schools to Apply to?

Hi,
I'm new on SDN and was wondering if those who have already applied in previous years or will apply this year could advise me on where to apply. Unforutnately my MCAT is 29R (9V, 10B, 10P) - so I know bad news there 🙁. My Science GPA is 3.73 and Overall is 3.83. I am a resident of Illinois and will apply to most of the MD schools here, as well as a few DO schools. I am uncertain where I could apply MD and be competitive... I think I have good and interesting ECs and my major is Social Welfare.

I had similar GPA (3.75 overall and 3.95 bcpm) and lower mcat (27Q, 10vr, 9bs 8ps) and I got into my state school, University of Alabama School of Medicine (also know as UAB).

Don't think you can't get in, because it is certainly possible. Your best option will be to apply to your state schools for sure. Second to that I would apply to EVMS, Wake Forest and Tulane. I got rejected from all of those, but after some research they seemed like the best possibilites for me as an OOSer with lower MCAT and good GPA.

Does anyone know what types of stats are needed to get into UofMichigan's med school? Im sure they are solid numbers but I wondered how impossible they were. I know if I should kill my hopes now or hold on for another year or two.

Definitely try all of the Illinois schools- it's nice that there are quite a few of them! You could also try Temple and Creighton. You have a really strong GPA, so you definitely have a shot at several schools.

I'm assuming from your status (Woohoo, Pistons and Red Wings!!) that you are a Michigan resident, which helps. That said, UMich is a top 20 school that does accept a fair number of out of staters, which doesn't. My one-year-old MSAR lists their average MCAT as a 35Q (12P/11V/12B) and GPA as 3.8. Those are some pretty high averages, but not impossible. It's hard to say without knowing what your stats are.

Just so you know the numbers listed in the MSAR are medians and not averages, and they're for all accepted applicants (including people who matriculated elsewhere), not matriculants. Doesn't mean that UMich is any easier or harder to get into, but just something to consider.

Hey everyone. I know these personalized questions that are "all about me" come up all the time, but I really do need some advice on what schools to apply to. I've lived in California all my life and will be applying to all the med schools here, but I need to figure out where else would be a good match for me. I've looked through the MSAR book several times, but there's only so much you can get from that. Also, what is an appropriate number of schools to apply to if I want to avoid re-applying (my 2006 MCAT scores expire if I don't get in this round)? • On the board of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (SD)
• Neuroscience Research Associate in Biotech company for 2.5 years
• Summer research at UCSF Diabetes Center
• Cognitive Science Student Association Officer (President, Vice Pres, Treasurer, Social Chair) for 4 years
• Sorority Officer (Vice Pres Finance, Scholarship Chair) for 4 years
• Airline Ambassador trip to help at orphanage in Honduras for HIV+ kids (one time)
• Summer volunteer at UCSD Cognitive Neuro lab

Can't say I agree with DoctorPardi.

I know overqualified Wake Forest undergrads who didnt even get interviewed. Same goes for Tulane. Tons of applicants, looking for something more than just numbers, as both schools have rejected a number of people I know with outrageous numbers. Retake that MCAT, try to get 31 or higher, and you should be golden all over, especially Illinois, SIU, and Rush. Applying earlier will markedly increase your chances at the schools in Illinois.

upstate or downstate Illinois? definitely RFU and U of I instate. If you are from downstate most definitely apply to SIU if you like PBL
