This is a random question, but at which schools is it easy to meet people? I have a friend I went to undergrad with who now goes to UIC COP. She felt she would get lost at schools like UNC or UT-Austin so she didn't even apply. Is this true?

I go to UT Austin. There are a lot of students in the university for undergrad, but by the end of the semester you pretty much feel like you are going to a tiny school. You end up running in to people you know around every corner. I can't imagine how bad this would be in a smaller school.

The biggest problem about going to a school with a lot of students is that when you have a problem (for example, with registration, or needing special permission to drop a class, or needing to find out if there is a service that can help you with some issue you are having, etc) the people who work in the offices can be so UNHELPFUL! To them, you are just one of the many, many, many people requesting their help and they have too much to do already. Also, a lot of the staff do not know the answer to the question you have, so you end up asking several people before you find the right office or person.

HOWEVER, the College of Pharmacy is pretty small. Only about 500 people in the entire program, Ph.D candidates included. As far as I've heard (I haven't exactly started yet), everybody knows everyone else and it is no problem meeting everyone. And as far as the staff issue, it is not a problem because the pharmacy office takes good care of their own and they are very helpful people.

Austin's the #1 city in the US.

people are incredibly friendly... 🙂

Thanks, that was very helpful. By the way, how come UT-Austin is the ONLY school that requires genetics as a prereq? 😡

I believe some other schools require genetics as well.
I know USC does and some allows to substitute genetics with biochem

I guess it is a pre-req because at UT, genetics is a pre-req for the micro classes. It's frustrating because they basically taught us the exact same things in both classes, it was pretty much like repeating a course.

Like cross was saying above, austin is a pretty cool place to live. There is a huge number of young people, so it is always easy to meet people. Plus it is a pretty progressive town unlike most cities in Texas.

Hmm, do you think they'd give me any crap about taking Microbiology first? I won't be able to take Genetics until Spring 2006.

I think you can take Micro first. They won't care or even notice probably. You only have to take genetics first if you do your pre-reqs at UT or another school where genetics is a pre-req for micro. As long as you have all the credits they require for admittance, it won't matter what order you did them.
