Schools with Great Sports Medicine Opportunities?

Hi all,

I was wondering if you all, current DO students, had any input on schools that have good primary care sports medicine opportunities (research, athletic event coverage, etc.)? I'm about to apply and would like to add some schools to the list with these such potential experiences. Maybe some of you could shine a light on good experiences you've had at varying schools/rotations?

LECOM-Erie. Sports Medicine Fellowship is based out of the fitness center, which is one of the more impressive centers you can find that is not tied to a large university or pro sports team.

Dr. Leary is the President of AOASM. The sports med club has sideline opportunities with local high schools and the two colleges as well as the NBA-D League team and a professional hockey team.

Was about to suggest this. Sports med here is a real big deal, as multiple members of our faculty are involved with VT athletics (as well as close-by Radford University, and local public schools.) There is also an affiliated sports med fellowship as well.

Hey NeuroSpeed, I'm an incoming OMS-1 at VCOM-VA and I'm really interested in the sports medicine experiences VT has to offer. Do you know if there are clinical research and/or volunteer opportunities available there during first year? And are these opportunities usually coordinated by VCOM faculty or would I have to seek them out at VT myself?

I am sure there are plenty of opportunities, I am just not entirely familiar with them as I wasn't involved in sports med. But when you get here you can talk to pretty much any of the OMM faculty or find out who the Sports Med club officers are and I am sure they will be happy to point you in the right direction.

And PS, this is a solid thread, I tell you VCOM-VC is really getting higher on my list, I feel like I had not payed much attention to it for a while, but it seems like cool stuff about it keeps getting unearthed.

TCOM won AOASM Chapter of the Year this past year, we have tons of sports med opportunities and a great student chapter. Shout out to VCOM for having a great SM club too.

I am a VCOM grad and former officer in the sports med club. I can tell you the sports med experience is one of the best in any allopathic or osteopathic school. The sports med club gets to cover almost any event at VT throughout the year. We used to have a calendar of all the practices and games and sign up to cover. We'd be along side the fellows and attendings. Everything was up for grabs except football games. During the busy fall I was out covering at least 2 events a week. You could cover football practices, training room (pre game/post game), soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, wrestling, etc. Got to practice my OMT on athletes pre-game. Plus you can also help at local high schools and do pre-participation physicals. I am a current PM&R resident and planning on doing a sports med fellowship and can tell you my resume of sports coverage coming out of VCOM was pretty lengthy. You can get involved as much as you would like. And the attendings love to teach. Message me if you have any other questions.

VCOM VA without question. Affiliation with Va Tech is huge. Huge proportion of OMM teachers are sports med fellows, MSK block was also taught primarily by Sports Med fellows (at least for the clinical medicine class), Sports Med club is fun (journal club in the sports medicine club with the fellows, been to it once it was cool) .....GO HOKIES.
