Since I am being super indecisive about what schools to apply to I thought I would make a post where everyone else can share their picks.

Right now I am only certain about Univ of MN and Colorado although my chances OOS are so slim I am not sure why I am bothering.

Can't decide about my other choices.

Ugh, bummer. Any other options to ask? You still have 6 weeks...

No, no decision between ISU and Illinois.

My pocketbook says I should pick 4 but I cannot narrow down the field from 5.

i completely understand that! hopefully you can find a way to apply to all 5! that's a tough decision to make -- between illinois and isu. for me, i would have to choose isu b/c of the gre cutoff for illinois. my best gre score was right before their 2007 cut-off. 🙂 is minn your in-state?

I don't think it's a score cutoff that riley is talking about, it's a cutoff for how long its been since you took it. Like, I don't think they take scores more than 3 years old?

yep that's what i'm talking about, they don't take gre scores before 2007 (i can't remember the particular month). it's a great school and i would love to apply there...stupid gre. 🙂

I think I am apply to Ohio State (my IS), and I can't fully decide yet but possibly UC-Davis and Wisconsin...I was thinking Illinois also, but I took my GRE in 2006 and don't really want to go through that again if I don't have to!

I really like the curriculum at Western, but my parents are worried about me graduating from a younger school with "limited accreditation". I too am interested to know more about Western's reputation within the veterinary community. Does anyone know where I might get such information from an unbiased source?

It took me awhile to make this list of four, I initially just wanted to apply to Cornell and call it a day. But I knew how insane that would have been. Submitting my VMCAS in two weeks and working on the supps throughout september.

It seems like a silly reason to eliminate a good program I know but I cannot retake the GRE right now. Bummer though.

I've got a bit of a conundrum.

Background: I'm applying to dual degree DVM/PhD programs. All of the ones I'm considering will send the application to the general DVM applicant pool if not selected for the dual degree program.

However, I've realized that I'm not really sure that I'd want to start a DVM-only program anywhere but at Davis. Now, I'm not really too convinced that I'm going to get into the dual degree or DVM programs at the schools I'm applying to, obviously. I've still been going over the various scenarios in my head, and the one that I'm really unsure about is what I would do if I got into a DVM program at another school and not the DVM or dual degree at Davis. I am pretty damn sure that barring a major problem during my last year of my MS, I will get into a PhD program here. Thus the question becomes "What would I do if I got into only the PhD program here at UCD and a DVM program at another school?" and the answer to that is very hazy - but I am pretty sure I'd pick the PhD here over the DVM anywhere else. So THEN, the obvious follow-up is whether it's worth it to even apply to any other schools.

Put more simply, my order of preference and projected chances based on my own instinct goes as follows:

1) UCD dual degree (very unlikely)
2) UCD DVM-only (okay shot) OR dual degree at another school (very unlikely) <--- this would be another difficult decision
3) PhD program at UCD (99% certain I'll get in)
4) DVM program at another school (unlikely but less so than dual degrees)

My list of schools I'm considering includes Cornell, Tufts and CSU. So schools that are tough to get into in the first place, honestly. So there's a good chance I wouldn't even have that choice to make at all, but stranger things have happened and I am a bit leery of spending so much money on applications when I'm not even sure I'd attend. Not to mention having to then be branded with having turned down a DVM program for a PhD program the next time I apply for a DVM (which would probably happen again eventually, either at Davis or elsewhere).

I'm so confused. 🙁

I'm applying to Western as well. From what I've gathered, it's a great school with a really unique curriculum (problem based learning). I'm pretty sure that Cornell has something to that effect (I might be wrong). I don't know anything about it having a "limited accreditation". I knew that Tuskegee had that, but I think that they got it back. But I'm really excited to check it out, if I get an interview that is. I'm putting tons of time into the outrageous amount of supplemental stuff that they require, so hopefully it pays off.
I'm also applying to Michigan (IS ), Iowa, and maybe Illinois (???) everyone seems to be so on the fence about Illinois, I wonder why. It seems like an especially rough oos applicant pool. I've also considered University of Sydney and UPEI, anyone have any experience applying to those schools as international applicants?

I've got it "narrowed" down to 10 schools. There is still whittling yet to be done. I'll apply to Tufts and Davis for sure (Davis is in-state, Tufts has a unique conservation medicine program). The other possibilities are Cornell, CSU, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, UPenn and Wisconsin. All those are based on my having completed the required classes and the schools not being in the South since I absolutely do not see myself living in the South for 4 years. Nothing against you southerners, I'm just pretty sure I'd clash in every way possible.

Oh right! I guess I probably should 😛 My residency status is very odd, since I'm originally from Wisconsin and my driver's liscence still says I am so my mom can keep helping me with my car insurance. However, I live and work in Illinois (came down here for school).
So I'm not really sure where I'm from 😛

Usually you can determine residency by whatever state you pay income tax in.

Actually for both states I've gone through it for (FL and CA) the residency process has mandated having had a drivers license in the state for a year prior to when you begin classes, as well. So no, that's not true in my experience.

i can agree with this statement regarding florida. my family lives in florida, i have lived in another state since 2001 (with a driver's license in my current state). what nyanko said about the driver's license was exactly what i was told regarding claiming florida residency.

Okay, so this won't be until at least next fall (depending on how fast I can get my pre-reqs done) and it keeps changing, so probably by then it will be completely different, but right now these are the schools on my "short" list:

You do not need to worry about that. If you apply as dual DVM/PhD and you do not get in as a dual applicant, you just state that you knew you wanted to do both, but felt that completing the PhD first would benefit your career direction because??? (you already have done the masters, completing the PhD directly after makes most sense, you want to do clinical stuff last, blah, blah...).. point being is that you did not turn down one choice for the other, you are dedicated to both, just were forced to do them separatley.👍🙂

nyanko, I can relate to your situation. If you are committed to doing a PhD at Davis, which you are 99% sure you are going to get into, then I wouldn't bother applying to the other schools. You were invited to interview once before at Davis, and it sounds like you have already greatly improved what was an already great application. But I guess I am kinda biased since I go to Davis and I think you would be an awesome classmate...

I was accepted to both LSU and Western and I chose to go to LSU. I too liked Western's school, but it is younger and I don't think it's ranked yet. I loved the school when I went there, but it's not like a "normal" university. It's very specialized for professional school only and doesn't have things like a football team, or things you would associate with an undergraduate school, which is fine, but just something to think about.

I just finished my first week of vet school at LSU and I absolutely love it. I would say if you like Western, then you'll like LSU too. The reason I say this is because LSU combines the best of both worlds in my opinion. You have lecture style classes, but you are also exposed to Problem Based Learning (PBL) throughout the entire curriculum. Right now we have a class called Principles of Problem Solving where we are already working in our PBL groups and getting lectures on how to go about working/soliving PBLs. Then in the 2nd semester of 1st year, end of 1st semester of your 2nd year, and beginning of your 1st semester of your 3rd year you are only working in your PBL groups for a few weeks solving a few cases.

So you might want to consider LSU as well. If you have anymore questions, I'll be more than happy to answer them. Just PM me.

i agree...it's the bio gre. 🙁 i REALLY like oklahoma. and one of the large animal doctors i ride with has had really nice things to say about the school as well. maybe i'll plan ahead next summer and take care of the bio gre! 🙂 my classes started this monday. i'm already feeling overwhelmed!!! this isn't going to be a fun semester.

The bio GRE is offered in April, October, and November. Any of these three test dates is sufficient for applying... April being too late for the current round, of course.

Don't let it scare you - I went in with general knowledge from my classes and no botany at all (nor did I really study any beforehand) and I made a 580. That's not wonderful, not in my opinion, but it was spot-on average for the matriculating class.

I also 'only' have an 1150 so far on the GRE general (haven't retaken it yet) and that's actually a smidge above average here...

Anyway, point is, don't let the bio GRE stop you if that's the only thing holding you back. It's no big deal. And remember: OKSU's supp is just a name and address, and like $35. No essays! 🙂

LOL, yes, unusual but true. I only live about an hour south of the Red River, so in reality it isn't that far from home.

No worries on the competition since I'm OOS. You're already one leg up on me just based on the stats.

I agree, other than the beating that goes with any standardized test, the bio GRE wasn't so bad. Actually, I think I preferred it to the general GRE.

Maybe the app cycle will work out and we'll be classmates!

I seriously can't decide between Illinois and LSU. Since my grades are not anywhere near stellar, I basically need to apply to wherever I have the best shot,..I can't really be choosy! I'm not into wasting like $105 (?) on applying to a school where I have no shot. I'd rather use that money to buy a suit for any interviews I may get (because I actually don't own a suit...pretty pathetic that a 23 yr old doesn't have a suit . but that's only wishful thinking I guess). Does anyone know about the grade forgiveness at Illinois? Do they get 'forgiven' often? Any advice would be highly appreciated.

• UC Davis (OOS, but in the miracle event that I do get in, I will get IS tuition b/c I went to HS in Cali)
• CSU (My 2 parrots are in long term foster care in CO, and I would do ANYTHING to be close to them. I know I need a miracle to get in, but I can't not try. I don't know why I'm doing this to myself though, because it will still be devastating to get that rejection 🙁)

my vmcas is done and i need to submit it before i drive myself nuts going back and wondering if i should reword a description, delete a community activity, or add something somewhere else. i'm waiting on one LOR to be submitted (i have already registered the information). i know this has been discussed before, but has anyone submitted this year before all LORs have been completed? or waiting to make sure everything is complete before hitting "submit?" just wondering. it's such a big decision!!!
