Does 199s (independent research courses count towards your science GPA? Also, does any science class count towards your science GPA as long as its within a science department (like life sciences, MCDB, MIMG, etc...)?

Research counts.

mcdb = molecular/cell/dev bio? then yes.
MIMG = microbio immuno and molecular gen? then yes.

Sorry, not up to par with my acronyms.

from everything i've heard, and from what i put on my own application, life science 199's count as science gpa

lol i like the name. i like kiwis. not sure why, but amusing. haha

awesome, just wanted to get a heads up now so i know what to do in the future

what sort of independent research counts towards SGPA? Does it have to be an independent research project through a science department or does the same rule that determines that classification of other non-science department courses apply to independent research projects (content not department)?

Basically, I have two independent research projects.

1) I did data collection and analysis for a project that measured the factors that effect coalition casualty rates in Afghanistan and Iraq- Although it was through the poli sci department, this project required quite a bit of math and stats.

2) I am doing an independent research project through the psych department on a neuroscience topic.

Would either of these count?

Thanks

i would think they would just change your designation to the department the class was listed under and not count it for your science gpa. you can try but it will probably fail

Hmm...AMCAS told me that to determine the classification of courses that aren't obviously in a science department, they look at the course bulletin for the class. If a directed study does not have a course description listed in the generic bulletin, how would I be able to provide the description prior to AMCAS'S assessment of the course? Or, would I only be able to appeal it?

Does it really matter? Even if AMCAS disputes your characterization, the worst they do is correct it (unless you are doing it habitually).

Just don't go crazy. A neuroscience class through the psych department can be considered science, a French class is clearly not.

if there is a way to provide a course description prior to AMCAS's course evaluation- in substitution of what is typically relied upon- the course bulletin- to determine whether or not the course's content has enough science to be counted towards our science gpa, then I would like to pursue this option instead of waiting to appeal it- which I am sure takes more time and has less success.

- it also matters in terms of how I am going to schedule my classes- By reliably predicting what courses will be counted towards my science gpa, I can better evaluate how many more science courses I need to raise my GPA...

so yes, it does matter.

It is content based. You can list any biological or scientific research as science GPA. Most everything else is not. You are the best at knowing just how scientific your poli sci research was. Your 2nd research in the psych department is surely science GPA.

if the title of the 199 is life science, it'll probably be more likely to be counted as science gpa when amcas verifies it. you can try listing the poli sci one as science, but they may remove it.

i really do like kiwis.
