Hi everyone,

I had a quick question about science gpas. I currently have a 3.2 science gpa (with just chemistry) and was thinking about taking organic over the summer at the state university close to where I live. I was wondering if I get an A or a B in orgo at another university, does that count into my science gpa when I apply to medical school?

Overall I have a 3.2 science gpa and a 3.6 total gpa as a sophomore. Does that put me in the running for a middle tier med school still? I go to a top 20 university.

All courses taken will be factored into your AMCAS GPA.

No. A 3.2 sGPA is well below the average matriculant at any MD school.

In 2011 the mean matriculant (ie accepted into medical school) science GPA was 3.61, so you want your science GPA around there

If I can get an A in biology for two semester and Organic over the summer, my science gpa will be at about a 3.46. Are my chances significantly better with that?

If I take Organic at another school, it will still count into my science gpa for med school but not my university gpa? is that correct?

better yes. Significantly, yes. Competitive no. Pull it up to a 3.5 and you are golden. 3.5 seems to be the magic number.

Don't take orgo over the summer
Trust me. DO NOT.

this. I took it in 16 weeks and even then that class was my life. Taking it in 6-12 weeks is suicide unless its watered down.

As someone who busted her tail all summer taking organic, don't take it during the summer unless you absolutely have to.
