I just realized my med dreams might be over! I had no idea Math was part of the science gpa calculation. My freshmen year i got a C in algebra and F in pre calc (I just didnt care/drunk everyday). After that i went on to chemistry 1 and got an A in the class and lab. I played with the GPA calculator and i would have to get around 40 credits of straight A's to even get a 3.5. Am i doing this right? Im fu**** 🙁

I have a 3.3 cgpa but when all my grades are calculated i have a 3.15 (witht that F), i know this because i was attending law school and they use a LSDAS gpa that calculates all grades just like AAMC. Im just worried about my science GPA! Can someone boost my hopes, i looked at the chart for AA's and my gpa is irrelevant if i get the MCAT score i suppose.

For DO schools math is not included in your sGPA. So there's that.

Retake it, prove you can handle it and have learned your lesson, and be able to explain if it gets brought up in an interview. Also, keep mind if you apply DO AACOMAS uses grade replacement so if you were to retake algebra and pre-calc with higher grades they would replace your old ones.

Edit: Woops, forgot about that tp13. It would still help your cGPA though.

Off topic, but does anyone know if political science is part of science gpa? It's a government course.

Yeah i am retaking both but i know for MD they count both grades. I really dont want DO. what is tp13?

It's still not a death sentence. I have a 3.45cGPA and 3.35sGPA and managed an MD acceptance. I also have more than my fair share of Cs, a D, and a few Ws on my transcript. When asked during interviews I honestly just explained my immaturity, lack of focus and willingness to take accountablity for my own laziness when I earned these grades, how I changed, and what I've gained from it. tp13 is a fez adorned cat sporting a bowties and blazer. Also, why no DO?

It would be significantly more realistic for you to shoot for DO, given your math situation. Although Merrhary(sp?) And Howard may be willing to overlook your sGPA as well, but I'm not as familiar with those tbh.

DO = MD in pretty much everything except for the most competitive specialties. By that I mean it is more difficult for a DO to match, say, derm given the exact same step scores. Otherwise there is no difference in practice.

Thanks wilbur and touch! Would i have any problem becoming a anesthesiologist as a DO? My family is against DO for some reason?? idk my 1st cousin is a MD so idk if thats where its coming from. I sound like a straight noob because i am one, sorry guys 😕

If you don't want DO because you don't want to learn OMT, or are totally set on urology, or are super interested in research, that's legit. But if your reasoning is you think DOs are somehow "lesser" then you are just being silly.

Ijs

It might be a bit of an uphill battle for anesthesiology, but it's still doable. If you want that you are going to have to succeed in med school regardless of DO or MD.

My advice would be to either ignore your family or educate them. There is a lot of misinformation that people pick up on DOs. Don't let anyone hold you back from achieving your dream.

And don't worry about being a n00b, we all were once lol

Thanks touch, really helpful. I definitely need to educate them because they feel that society looks at DO lower then MD. For example i was told if someone had to pick between a MD or DO to go see, they would pick the MD. lol i know sounds crazy, but very serious. Do you think society knows the difference and would pick a doc on qualifications not the MD or DO behind the name?

Gas is a SUPER DO friendly specialty. I wouldn't care so much about what your family says. My family was against me applying to DO schools and would hound me about it any chance that had. I applied regardless as I put a bit more presidence over my future and what I want to do with my life, than my families misinformed preconceptions.

The general public for the most part doesn't know or care. MDs don't care if their colleagues are DOs and vice versa. NPs and PAs don't care if their oversite comes from a DO. You should read (and have your family read) "The D.O.'s" by Norman Gevitz - it should provide a lot of answers and clear up a lot of misconceptions.

Will read Wilbur, thanks for the suggestion. Yeah ill cross the boards and clinical when i reach that bridge, i just want to be afforded the opportunity to be an anesthesiologist as a DO if i do choose the DO route
