I'm a kinesiology major at William and Mary. I tend to do very good in these courses bc they are human focused and dealing w/ exercise which i know. However bc of the difficulty of the school i attend and just my lack of amazing skill in them...my chem and physics grades haven't been as high..though not horrible. I was worried that my science gpa wouldn't be that great but then i read on the AACOM website that kinesiology is included under other science which is included in the science gpa. I was just wondering if this is true and if anyone else has experience with this. Its great news if it is. I've also noticed math isn't included like in md schools. Thanks

I thought math is a part of the science gpa for MD schools but not for DO schools.

?? wonder why you would think that????

biggest difference between the 2 is that repeated classes will take only the best grade in DO while averaged in MD.

math is a science class in DO

for DO schools math is NOT included in your science GPA. It is only calculated in your overall GPA and non-science GPA.

scroll down to the very bottom of the link in this thread and read the last paragraph:

"The Science category would include all courses with subjects of Biology, Organic, Biochemistry, Other Science, Physics, and Inorganic Chemistry."

"Non-science would include courses with subjects of Math, English, Behavioral Sciences, and Non-science."

I am an exercise science major as well. I divided my kinesiology/exercise science/wellness courses, both masters and bachelors, under science and non-science kind of depending on content of class.

For instance, my biomechanics class was nothing more than physics because that is what our professor liked. Or some of my physiology exercise classes...you bet believe I classified them as science. However, I had some classes in my major that I didn't quite feel justified in putting in the science section so I put them with all the others.

Yes, I did the same thing as the above poster. I have a Masters Degree in Ex Physiology and listed my Kinesiology under other science and the rest of my physiology classes under biology. there were some classes, i.e. cardiac rehabilitation which I had originally thought that it should be classified as other science but i was reading carefully and realized that AACOMAS puts most therapy classes as non-science. Its a shame because I learned a lot about physiology in this course. Do you guys think I should contact AACOMAS about this? Considering I got an A in this course, I would hate to put it on the wayside due to a small discrepency in class detail? what should I do?

I didn't stress over the classification of the courses that much. I'd say put it under the science especially if it helps that GPA 😉 Again, I highly doubt anyone would ever question a few classes that an applicant misclassified. Especially if you can back it up and explain the topical material you covered.

I actually contacted AACOMAS about this issue--classifying certain courses. According to them, I can send them a description of the course from the college catalogue. I will probably do this, only because I dont want to inflate my gpa and then have them question my app.
