Dear fellow members,
I, like many of you, am at the threshold of joining the advanced standing program this year. From what I hear about the new US government laws, issue of work visas to foreigners is being restricted. This is obviously a cause for concern as we would all have huge loans on our heads after graduating and would need the visa for at least a few years to pay back our loans.
Does anyone have a clearer perspective about the ease of obtaining H-1 visas after graduating and how the new government laws would affect foreign trained dentists after they graduate from their program. I've also heard that there is something known as OPT which allows us to practice for up to 29 months after graduating before we need to legally have the H-1 visa for working in the US. Is that true?
Your valuable comments would be highly appreciated..

hey guys- this is a scary time, and I have doing that legal help really helps. I went to a career MD thing last week and met a group of attorney's that were supper friendly. come to find out my friend has used them too and I did not know. even if you program says they will do the paper work, its best to hire your own attorney, but I wanted to send u guys the link because I found these folks so helpful. they are based in NY, but can represent you in any part of the country because immigration is fed law.

So t I was kind of shocked to find out you should get an lawyer even if the peole hiring u say they will take care of it. they told me some stuff I should do on my own and they did not charge m, btu they helped me with other stuff. they charge like 100.00 for an initial consultation fee where they get all your info, and come up with a plan. then they have a fee depending on how complicated things are.

I will keep u posts. .
i dont want to make it look like i am advertising. I am not getting any benefit from this. so i wont post their info on here. just send me a private message and I will give you the info of the person i am familiar with. good luck PM me if you know of someone good too.

good luck

The new laws does not affect the dental field right now. As per the new laws, only companies i.e financial companies who are getting government assistance under TARP, cannot file for new H-1B's. I don't think you will be working for any of the financial companies once you graduate.

I hope this helps.

The 29 months OPT is only for STEM ( those with Masters of Science, Tech, Engineering, Maths Only) students and Dental and Med students dont fall in the category, we just have12 months of OPT with 60 days of grace period.
