congratulations to all of those that have matched into rad onc. unfortunately today i received the news that i have not matched to an advanced position. anyone out there have success with the scramble? any tips on how to proceed tomorrow? ive matched into a prelim position, not sure if it is int med prelim or ty yet though. any help is much appreciated. thanks!

First, I'm sorry it didn't work out for you as planned, it sucks.

Last year there were three programs in the scramble. The University of Louisville filled their spot the first or second day of the scramble. The other two U. of Kentucky and U. of Kansas just took in applications and sent out interview invites after the scramble period and signed candidates like a month after match day. Basically there is not a lot you can do just submit to the open programs via ERAS and if you have a rad onc faculty member willing to call the open programs on your behalf that always helps. I don't know if this will happen this year but over the past 8 months maybe 9 spots opened up outside the match to start this July (Maryland, Cincinnati, San Dieago, Mississippi, Baylor, Nebraska, Methodist come to mind).

For many, this ends up being a blessing in disguise. Keep checking here and the ASTRO website for spots that become available. If you're committed to this field, don't give up!

how likely is it that a pgy-2 spot in rad onc will open up outside of the match?

what other resources are out there to find a spot? i know of the astro website, but anything else?

Chances are very good that a spot will open up. In fact, multiple ones will probably open. Besides the ASTRO website and SDN you may also call around to various program coordinators in regions where you are interested. Also, being in touch with the ARRO leadership helps.

And based on what I've heard, a lot of programs are trying to expand. If these expanded spots are granted, they likely will be off-cycle which means theyll open up during the year and not be within the ERAS/NRMP cycle. Good luck, and I really hope things work out!!

Consider doing a research year (or two) before/after internship with an NIH funded rad onc at a big name place. Or a year at the NIH doing research. Both will pay salaries enough to pay your bills, then you get in.

how do you apply for an NIH grant? is there a website? do you already have to be with a department?

when would you do this? towards the end of a PGY-1 year if you still don't match? would you recommend one reapply through the match again during PGY-1?

thank you for all the responses. unfortunately, i was not one of the lucky scramblers and am still looking for a spot. i too am wondering if i should reapply during PGY-1 year or go into a research position following internship to boost my application. your advice is greatly appreciated.

also, are all of the spots that open up posted on SDN or the astro website, or are many of them by word of mouth? do you recommend any other sites like residentswap.org? i have not actually met anyone in rad onc who reapplied and matched the following year. anyone with a success story out there willing to share their experience?
