In combination, Schadenfreude is clearly a paradox- sympathies, yet joyful. This is where I think the American interpretation strays from the true meaning, by interpreting it as "pleasure at others' misfortune." In reality, I think, schadenfreude includes simultaneously both sympathy and pleasure, leaving the border between the two rather ambiguous...

Edit: Man, I can be a prick when I'm having a bad day. It's your user name. It means what you want it to mean.

This guy named Jeff put a "creative" rhyme to my name Kara-Kaye and started calling me Kara-ma-Kaye. I dropped the Kara and kept the rest, thus, MaKaye. I added 55 because I like the number 5 and doubled it because my dad was born in 55. I've used this handle for almost every login name I've created in the past 5 years. 🙂

Born in 1989. Favorite clothing brand in the sixth or seventh grade was akademiks, so you know.

Igni = latin for fire; which I used to play with for fun and (professionally) for a few years
Fera = also latin, for wild; the way my partners and I used to perform with the flames
Igni Fera = wildfire*

* I know nothing about the proper order to put latin words into...it just sounded better than Fera Igni when I came up with it for another forum I'm on...

I was part of a fire and stilt performance troupe that used chants mixing words from latin, greek, japanese, sanskrit, and so on to define the next movement of the choreography.

Chanting "Igni Natura Renovatur Integra" - "all things in nature are renewed by fire" - always got our shows started... 😀

as a kid i was teased for wearing glasses. "wow can you see the future with your glasses?". "when you look at maps, do people wave back at you?" "can you tell what's wrong with the Hubble from here?" but the most annoyning was this one guy who would always yell "four eyes! you have four eyes!hahahaha!" so i became iiiimonica. monica is my first name...let's not even get into the monica jokes!

a good friend from kenya says "eye eye eye eye monica" and it sounds so cool, so i have kept it (i've had it on my accounts for 10 years) plus i'm an optician who will be going to optometry school, so i'm stuck with it

yeah i'm an optometry nerd!

I worked in a Chinese restaurant in undergrad. The manager moved here from China (formerly in the Chinese Opera, but that's for another story about unfair kareoke contests). He started every sentence, good or bad, with "goddamnit baby" such as

"Goddamnit baby, table 4 needs more water" or
"Goddamnit baby, you are doing a good job"

So whenever my friends and I would talk about anything we would use "goddamnit baby" to start the converstation. As a matter of fact, I just called an old grad school friend of mine who I hadn't talked to in a while. She must have seen my number pop up and when she answered she said "goddmanit baby, how have you been?"

I am going to remember that!

Some dedicated fans will recognize my user name...
Harry Potter is one of my favorite books and I think the name Parvati is cool. The ending P, of course, is for Patil.

The avatar goes so well with your name too.

M is my first two initials (though I do know someone that's MMM... same first and middle names as me too. It was very weird). Venus because a certain show I watched featured a Venus, and I loved Greek and Roman mythology. 929 is my birthday. I've had the s/n for a long time, as well as a couple variations of it.
