I know this is a pretty common thread but my situtation is a bit different. First semester freshman year i went to syracuse university. I didn't care for the social life there and transfered to binghamton second semester. Problem is that while i was there i scored a D+ in freshman composition. My other grades were fine, gpa still came to a 3.2. I just didn't like the class and chose not to go.

My questions, how bad will this be to come back? And exactly how can i come back from it? Normally i'd retake the class and kill it but since i transfered thats not an option. Binghamton doesn't even offer a similar course. Binghamton's requires that I take 4 writting classes but they aren't dedicated writing classes. They are classes that you write more than 15 pages.

Anyone got any ideas? I tried going to the general advisors but they didn't seem to know whats up. Im planning on going to a pre-health advisor but i'd figure i'd see what you guys thought.

I dunno if this helps but i did pretty bad in gen bio I (C;C- ish) and they only offered it fall semester at my university. Since it was spring semester I took it at a community college near-by and pharmcas and schools took that into consideration...I got an A btw...lol
Maybe try and find it at a community college and ace it

How long ago was "freshman year" for you?

The reason I ask is that some schools have an "academic forgiveness" policy that allows you to basically throw out grades 5+ (or so) years old. I'd look at the USN website for an example of this type of policy.

Another thing to keep in mind: some schools have a section in their supplemental application to explain situations such as this.

Also, schools look at trends in your GPA, so if your grades gradually got better over the years, that might be a bonus (or something you could talk about in an interview) down the road.

In the end, I would think that 1 bad grade amongst dozens of courses will not kill your application. Your cum. GPA is only 1 component of the overall application package and thankfully this particular course may not even be figured into your Pre-req GPA.

Good luck!

hmm... Have you taken your PCAT yet? There is a writing section and if you score well there the pharm school will take that in consideration. Just be sure to have a good explanation for your D on the interview.

Also, Pharm school usually look at your overall GPA and not at individual classes. But it's still a good idea to take a similar class at a near-by community college to show 'dedication' and 'determination' on your desire to be your best. 😀 And you can emphasis that at your interview. Cheers and good luck.

Freshman year was one year ago so no such luck.

I guess i'll try taking a writing course over winter break or something. Wasn't going to because bing won't accept the credit but at least i'll have something to point out when they point out my D.

Haven't thought about the PCAT yet, i'm a sophmore and i had a bit of a delayed start. After this semester i'll be done with intro chems and bios, calc 1 and 2, and other minor requirement things. I'm thinking i'll take it after next year. My grades are less than amazing (3.2 so far) so i don't know if it'd even be worth my time trying to apply any earlier than after i have a bs.

I really hate myself for what i did in that class. It was kind of a fluff freshman course so if i actually showed up i'd of gotten a good grade. Now i have a D on my record which is too low to even transfer over for credit. Plus it looks like the only time i tried a class in writting i bombed it.

I guess i'll have to destroy the pcat when it comes. Thanks for the advice.
