Scrubs recommendations for thin people

Hey everyone! I'm assuming that it's a good idea to have a couple pair of scrubs in med school. I'm average height, but very thin. I'm not trying to make a fashion statement, but does anyone have any brand recommendation on the cheaper side for scrubs that fit super thin females? Thanks =)

In med school, nobody provided me with scrubs. Just go to whatever store that others from your school go to and try some on.

For the OR, no, just used the locker room scrubs. For everything else, I used my own.

Use whatever scrubs they provide you.

Otherwise, like for anatomy, go buy some trashy ones from goodwill. No need to buy expensive ones, the hospital should give you access to them.

Closest I've come to security being called on me was before a SICU shift, walking to the locker with scrubs. Fun times.

But, seriously, the hospital should give you official access to them. No need to buy them. And hospital scrubs generally look hideous on everyone, super thin or super fat and anywhere in between.

Unless you get blood/fluids/tissue on your scrubs, I'd even venture to say your scrubs at the end of the day are cleaner than the business professional clothes you wear to clinic all day, and certainly cleaner than the white coat you haven't washed in a month.

I don't know if you want to be "that person", but you can always get your scrubs tailored in case your body isn't a perfect rectangle.

OP, did you just get in? Most schools provide you unisex scrubs. To be honest, in all of my previous workplaces, anyone who was wearing form fitting/flattering scrubs was almost always a (female) nurse 😉

OP, I will echo what others have said in that you will probably be wearing hospital-provided unisex scrubs except during anatomy. They're drawstring (at least mine are) so they shouldn't fall off. If you struggle with the saggy crotch issue of wearing pants made to accommodate male-bits, you could try rolling the waist. It's popular to do at my school. No one ever talks about the saggy crotch issue! 🙂

Some places are insane about not wearing scrubs too or from the hospital. U of Fl is like that, residents get in serious trouble if an administrator sees you wearing Shands scrubs outside the hospital.

I did just get in! I guess that's why I didn't even know hospitals provided students with scrubs. Honestly, I thought the only reason an MS1 or MS2 needed scrubs was for anatomy lab, which is why I was trying to find out which to buy.

You're correct, the only time afirst or second year student would need scrubs is in the anatomy lab, and the school generally does not provide them for you. If you do any shadowing during the first two years in the operating room, you would need hospital issued scrubs, and somebody will coordinate that for you.

I just tie the drawstring really tight and wear the jacket thing

As a thinner male, I usually just go for small or x-small, and proper tying took care of the rest. For anatomy lab purposes, if it is secure on you and comfortable, that should be plenty enough. Don't worry about it form fitting, or spending too much money, since I doubt you'll be reusing your anatomy lab scrubs after the class is done.

Also, our anatomy department had scrubs donated from past students. They were washed, and there was a whole pile of them. If your school has that, you could go and try a few and use them for free.

From what I can tell, haven't needed them myself yet. But, my classmates that where scrubs to the ED, or OR for shadowing and stuff, all seem to use the hospital issue ones. I don't think I've seen anyone where the scrubs they personally bought for lab around the hospital. This could be different at your school though.

Honestly, do not dare to wear your own purchased scrubs in the OR, odds are you'll get the boot. and as far as scrub sizes go, they were never designed to be fashion forward. If you really want to show off your skinny physique, do it at the beach. lol. There are usually more things to worry about if you're a 3rd year medical student if you're wearing scrubs.

Preclinically, (i.e. anatomy), you're focused too much on how you look when you're dissecting cadavers. there are better times to do that. lol (I usually don't think of whos hot and whos not in the cadaver lab...)

Agree with most of what's been said here. Hospital-issued scrubs are generally required for the OR. Depending on how daring you are, there might be other times outside of the OR that you could get away with wearing your own scrubs as a medical student. A lot of places you go will have two "generations" of scrubs: the old, worn in/soft normal fitting scrubs, and the newer, stiff as a board, fat motherf*cker scrubs made for the rapidly expanding waistline of Americans.
