Hey guys. Maybe I have too much free time on my hands, but here are this forum's averages from a previous thread:

Step I: 218.9
Step II: 225.2

Number of Interview Offers: 19.3

Interesting. Step I appears to be more heavily weighted among program directors and the mean score from a sample size of 16 (ok,ok, not a "powerful" study) is 1 point above average. That being said it is nearly impossible to complete 19 interviews, meaning many of those were most likely cancelled, opening up interview spots for those who did not make the "first cut". In my brief and low-strength study, I would surmise that to gain an interview in EM, board scores must be average, and that on average, applicants apply to way to many programs.

There is an article on the SAEM website that addresses selection criteria, and these numbers here fall right in line with what has been published. Also, supporting application materials such as grades, letters of recommendation, EM rotation, etc factor in as well. Hmmm.....

I think this jsut reinforces what has been said before, that board scores will mostly only hurt you (if bad, and really bad) and that a lot of the other variables are what really gets you the interview. Personally I think strong letters are key.

I don't remember my scores exactly, but here goes.

Step1- 224/225
Step 2- 245ish.

I don't remember how many I applied to, I think around 30. (rejected from *all* californias that I applied to!)

I got interviews at about 20, interviewed at 12 or so, ranked 8 and got my #1.

Some programs are very numbers driven, some look at the whole picture.

Yeah - there's a whole other post for individual scores that I averaged to get the numbers above. I think it is pretty interesting that this forum, which such a small samples size, is numerically very representative of the publised report for applicant statistics. Call it my own little "mini quality assurance" for this forum. Or, just call me a lame ass for taking the time to do that. Either way - y'all rock.

step 1 and step 2 were both 245 (was a better score for step1 than step2)

I went on about 16 interviews, declined one in MA. I got more than the avg # of rejection letters secondary to a unknown poor LOR.

I ended up matching at the program from where the LOR came. Ironically, this same person evaluated me as a resident as "outstanding" and "chief bound."

Uh.

Don't go by numbers... they don't matter at many places... and I've realized that kinda late? but anyways.... heres what has happened so far with my applicatioin

Step 1 - 242
Step 2 - 257
Places applied to - 51
Number of interviews - 5

Thats correct! I am a Foreign Medical Graduate... and that just changes the whole equation. MOST places (if not all) filter your application simply based on this fact alone. Why bother reviewing it? They honestly don't need to either. They have the commonly quoted contingent of 600 applications anyways!
Had I applied for Internal Medicine, I would have signed outside the match with one of the big names a long time back. It's just Emergency Medicine......

Don't look at absolute numbers... Sometimes, they don't matter...
