SDN hide and seek

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ahahah, Bowtie had an interview today! Could it be himmmm?:hardy:

no it is a girl... the one with most interviews on sdn, but i won;t say anymore... OMG OMG this internet/forum thing is so new and weird... OMG....😀😛
Ahahaha, congratulations on meeting Jolie_South...😛

Cool - I wanna meet Jolie!

So, how do you guys realize there are other SDNers there? Does someone generally bring it up? Is there a secret handshake? My first interview is on Friday, and I want to be prepared. 😉

HAHA secret handshake...oh god I would laugh if I saw some sdners doing that...which would probly include myself.

It is so sad I thought the same thing.

Edit: I would feel awkward bringing up SDN. I worked with an EMT in the ER at HUP last Saturday and he said we was "pre-med" as well. I wanted to ask him if he's on here. If he replies to this I will freak out (no one play a trick on me 😉)

LOLLL, I also post on the Canadian med/premed forum and this past May I was doing some Orgo labs up in Edmonton...on our lunch break, we were all sitting outside on the lawn and I struck up a convo with one girl and mentioned the forums to her...then all of sudden these two guys perk up and say they also lurk/post there. I'm like, "Yeah, I've got a ton of posts on there..." then one of them is like, "Oh my god, are you JOCHI!??"

Then he kept saying, "God, I can't believe I met JOCHI today!!!"

If I met someone with 23 posts/day I'd be amazed too. Too bad you're applying this year and not next, I think it'd be fun to talk to you at interviews, heh.

There were a few lurkers at my Georgetown Interview; it was cool to be able to put faces to names.

yeah i was the one that walked w/u to the hospital for our interviews. hope it all goes well for you. did u like georgetown?

also i met jolie way back in august and she said that I was the first one to identify her, do i get a prize for this???

seriously I would never bring up SDN at an interview. I would not even talk to anyone. I think i would be too nervous to talk .

I met a few people from SDN on the interview trail... I have a few in my class now.

EDIT: and I know the MCAT Mod Pengoin IRL.

You only think you know who I am. 😛

She and I e-mail each other frequently making fun of you all. 😀

Obviously you have no essays left for me to edit for you if you're going to go around making false accusations such as this one. 😱 😡 😀

And to get back on-topic, someone needs to fill me in on this secret handshake thing... Can I do it with a wing instead of a hand? If it involves any finger-snapping I'm screwed. 🙁

You'd be the awkward person in the waiting room. Both of my interviews have had a bunch of normal interviewees that chit chat to one another and then 1 silent/awkward person.

Okay, I have an awkward question but whatever. What exactly does everyone small talk about? I've always felt like I'm bad at it because I can usually only come up with one semi-good question. Like freshman year it was: "So where are you from?" and later "What's your major?" After those, I was just lost. I don't want to sit in a waiting room asking everyone "So where else are you applying" (which is probably awkward enough already).

Absolutely loved it. It was great to be back on campus; I'll actually be there again this weekend for the G'town/Yale football game - a friend of mine's cousin plays for Yale, so were going down to root for opposite teams. 😉

Best of luck with your application cycle; I've only heard back from two other schools, so I'm not sure if our paths will cross again.

Well, I'm pretty sure if anyone meets me, they will know, because I posted my picture on the "post your secondary picture" thread. Ummm ooops.

Well, at least for my Sept & early Oct interviews, I'll probably be wearing the same grey (kind of a black & white blend) pants suit, black shoes and bag, and with my longish brown hair pulled up in a pony tail. Feel free to ask "Hey, are you Phoenix?" before offering the secret SDN handshake. But if you're too shy, you could just ask where I'm from. If the response is Chicago, then feel free to proceed with the secret handshake. 😉

my meeting with kiara08 is the only official meeting that I've had.

however, some of the people i've met since have been suspiciously familiar.

then, again maybe not. i mentioned something about sdn to a couple of interviewees and they looked at me like i was crazy. 😕

i think i'm going to take my mdapps down now. i'm so paranoid. :scared:

What made you worry? I've been pondering taking mine down, but I really don't mind if people on SDN figure out who I am. The only danger I could see is adcoms seeing which schools I have interviews at and my level of excitement for each. But to be honest, they could much more easily do an mdapps search to find it than perusing Pre-Allo. So, if you're worried about adcoms, I think the only fix is to completely take down your mdapps page, or seriously change your identifying info. Anyone ever have any actual bad experiences from this? I sincerely doubt they search mdapps to find us, but that's just my guess.

I've met lots of SDNers - Chulito, notdeadyet, Johannen, and ctwickman. Then there's the whole crew at my school - most of whom I met online before meeting in person - Ashers, DoctorFunk, Agent Splat, donnyfire, Xandie, indo, samenewme, Ibn Sina, etc. Then I was also "stalked" on SDN by someone I knew IRL.

Wow Prowler,

You were stalked?? That person has no life or something.

I've met a few SDNers in real life but most of my friends who've made it into med school didn't use SDN or only used as a lurker but never posted or were people who used it in so far as they used interview feedback.

I do know people however who have told me that they met many SDNers in real life usually on the interview trail. it is not an uncommon thing.

first i am not saying it was Jolie
second it is not nice to talk about people behind their back, oops, its SDN, I forgot:meanie:
and third...never mind

I think it's okay if you gush.

I have found it fun to sit quietly and listen to people from The Best Schools insinuate that they have a leg up on those of us from Run Of The Mill Schools. Notably, they don't seem to comprehend that we were offered interviews at the same med schools. Ha. Mostly the other interviewees have been pretty cool people.

Phoenix, I think you need to institute the Secret SDN Hip-Bump.

What has always killed me is the silence that pervades the interview pool first thing in the morning. It's like pulling teeth to get people to talk (it always gives me the impression that they are silently sizing up the competition, as if anything could really be given away from seeing someone in a dark suit). Folks seemed to open up a bit more once SDN was brought up, but many were still like nervous gazelles on the Serengeti (think JD and his med students from the first season).

I know. I love talking to the other interviewees. I don't know why there is all this tension. There's room for more than one interviewee to get an acceptance.

We will, of course, have to fight to the death if you decide to go to Georgetown. 😉

I don't think its a matter of sizing up tension so much as general nervousness and if it is the morning hours well people generally don't tend to be the most upbeat at 8 am in the morning if that's how early you mean.

Of course a lot of interviews go whole day so technically the early morning thing shouldn't be a big deal. I know that a lot of schools usually have a lunch session in which you can get to know each other and med students. I am pretty sure the 4 Fl. MD schools are this way. I think the topic of SDN gets a lot of people to open up because SDN has this love hate relationship in which it both raises anxieties at some times but then goes back and serves as a way to reduce anxieties by showing that others are feeling as nervous as you in this process. So people probably recognize that fact and let loose.

That is funny. There will always be people who are arrogant out there. I think we all just need to remember that their big name school doesn't necessary mean automatic acceptance.

i don't know how i manage to find so many SDNers but i do. maybe because I'm from a small state. so much for anonymity....
