Hmmm, I am huge believer into preventative medicine but I never thought about it as a career option. I am not sure I agree with picking a specialty to suit my personality.

I took this quiz three times over the last 2ish years, I've always gotten.

95%+: 1)Urology 2) Ortho 3) Gen Surg

The next are always changing, but somehow OB/GYN is always up there

I took this quiz 10 months ago and got these as my top 5.

Emergency Medicine 73% Personality Match
Anesthesiology 73% Personality Match
Medical Genetics 71% Personality Match
Radiology - Radiation Oncology 70% Personality Match
Internal Medicine - Pulmonary Disease 69% Personality Match

Just finished taking it again.

Anesthesiology 76% Personality Match
Radiology - Radiation Oncology 75% Personality Match
Obstetrics and Gynecology 74% Personality Match
Emergency Medicine 74% Personality Match
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 72% Personality Match

Ob/gyn is shocking to say the least.

Apparently GI? :/

Preventative Medicine - Aerospace. Yup, I guess I could do that

I think one reason so many people are surprised by the results they are getting is because they might not be taking the assessment properly. I used to be a certified Gallup strengths coach, and ran weekend retreats on personality assessments (MBTI and Strengths Finder). You aren't supposed to ever choose a "middle" score. It should only ever be 10 or 0, nothing else. Anything in-between zeros out your response, or leads to fuzzy results.

It's also why people get their top results in the low 80's or high 70's, or have every result in the 90's.

Take it again and only choose 10 or 0 on the questions and you'll understand your results better because they will be an accurate reflection of your personality.

Btw: 90% hem-onc and 90% ER, 89% Ob-Gyn. I can live with all of those (and they so happen to be the specialties I'm most interested in!).

You must have hit hard on "lifestyle" answers (interests outside of medicine, wanting a high salary, lots of independence, etc.). If you haven't looked much into PM&R, you should. Pretty dope specialty.

Thanks for the advice I will look into that!

The problem for me is that for many of those questions is depends or sometimes. "How is your manual dexterity?" Answer: depends on what I have to do. Same answer for "do you like working with your hands?". This survey would be so much easier to answer if they presented a concrete problem and asked me what I thought and how I would solve it in a multiple choice format.

Approach it as an "in general" scenario--regardless of what task you are doing, "in general" how would you rate your manual dexterity, "in general" do you like working with your hands, and so on.

It's actually a great format for assessments like this because it forces you to answer intuitively, and, hopefully, most accurately.

Pediatrics was my top match, by a good margin. Followed by rad. oncology and medical oncology. I do understand my match with oncology, but I never expected pediatrics at the top of the list. I also don't understand why pediatrics is at the top of the list, but family med is near the bottom. How different are these specialties, other than patient population? Am I'm thinking of pediatrics too narrowly and this classification also includes all of the peds subspecialties?

Maybe I am just a wrong person to answer these questions or I am overthinking it but honestly I don't know. Unless you ask me about a specific task, I have no clue if I like "working with my hands" or either I am good at it.

Peds and family medicine ~80% tie:D

Why do you <3 dermatology so much?

@didymus I took the survey again with your method, but the results were not what I expected. My high scores were mostly medical specialties, but I love surgery.

I think because of these two reasons.
  1. Necrotizing fascilitis
  2. $$$$$$$
Her/his list just seems so odd (comments wise). How can anyone be that obsessed with derm?

Edit: upon reading the comments again, I can totally see why "<3 derm"

That's the thing with these assessments, they only tell you back what you put in.

It could be that those who created the questions and the correlate specialities were wrong in how they paired things up, but, again, the answers reflect only what you said.

Maybe it could be showing you that you would not, in fact, enjoy what is traditionally understood as the life and job of a surgeon?

I did an internship in heme/onc, and I absolutely hated it. I was told I have a 94% match to IM-Hematology. lulz.

Despite your confidence in your methods it seems they are flawed, as hem-onc and ER/OB are about as far as you can get in personality types

I mean that's just the result of his responses. I think the point was that if you enter anything in besides 0 or 10, you can't expect the quiz to give you the most informative answer (correct me if wrong)

Did it didymus' way:

Gen Surg 90%
Plastic Surg 90%

This.

Also, I don't expect the assessment to be totally accurate or exhaustive. However, it did accurately indicate the specialities--despite how different they may seem--that I have the greatest interest in. I was interested in all 3 before even taking the assessment, and it nailed them.

Maybe calling it a "personality assessment" was an error on my part. It may just indicate that I am equally suited to the top 3, not necessarily that my "personality" fits per se. It may be a subtle distinction, but important.

That's nuts.. Thoracic Surgery 95%. Picked it right out of my brain.

Nah, I put 10's on long hours and I would accept interruptions. I think it gave medical because of taking care of people, interest in basic medical science, and wanting to know everything about medicine.

I don't think I completely agree with the results. No way in hell I would do Radiology.

Radiology, Ortho, Neurosurgery, GI and Urology. In this order.

I always thought of myself as an EM or a general surgery type of a guy.
