SDN Specialty Quiz

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
At first the quiz seemed totally useless and my results didn't really "fit" with my personality, but after I followed didymus's advice I got some interesting top results:

Plastic Surgery 100% Personality Match
Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery 100% Personality Match
Ophthalmology 100% Personality Match
Emergency Medicine 100% Personality Match

I've always been interested in EM and various surgical subspecialties (re: variety, quick fixes, always busy, work well under pressure, etc.), but ophthalmology is something I never considered that actually seems to fit with my personality and goals. (Plastics, on the other hand, probably isn't attainable in reality for me--I'm very imaginative & visual, but not sure my hand-eye coordination and creativity match up :c)

Some things that came up in all/most of my top 4 (that describe really well what I'm looking for in a specialty/what my personality's like):
-Need to see tangible results of their efforts quickly/Want quick results (x4)
-Act decisively (x2)
-Be adventurous / like challenges (x3)
-Become bored with repetitive activity (x3)
-Pay attention to details (x2)

I then had 16 specialties with a 90% match lol so I guess my interests/strengths are pretty broad/broadly applicable? Definitely going to explore a lot before my M3 year so I have a better idea about what I actually like/what I actually might be good at.

2. Psychiatry
3. General IM

I don't know what to make of this..... guess I'm an emo person:confused:

Bumping bc this is an interesting read.
I took the quiz, highest match was 89% for Pathology:eek::nailbiting:. Took the quiz again, tried to reflect on the questions more thoroughly to answer them more accurately.....and got 94% Pathology+pissed+

Top 3:
Path 94% (no way)
Neurology 90%
Endocrinology 88%

Bottom 3:
Preventative med 64%
Peds 64%
FM 58%
What? Pathology is amazing. You are the first person to figure out and know a diagnosis!

Psychiatry 87%
Neurology 86%
Preventative Medicine Aerospace 86%

Excuse me while I go have a heart attack now. Aerospace psychology is what got me INTO medicine! Neurology has always been a favourite too and I have done ten quizzes, neurology has ranked #1 eight times and psychiatry is normally number two or three. I would say this is pretty darn scary but I can dig it.

The rest for completion... I also really like Emergency as well as Internal Medicine (general)

I'm on board with a couple of these, but Aerospace preventative medicine? What is that, even?

Aerospace Medicine is a subfield of preventative medicine which basically keeps pilots and astronauts healthy before they take off and when they are on the job. It's actually quite cool. I did aerospace research for a number of years and would KILL to get back into it.

As one aerospace doctor I know said, it's 90% primary care, 5% pathology, and 5% actually aerospace medicine.

Fairly accurate test. I do get along with people in my top 5 specialty matches, since I am a fun laid back kind of guy. But I want to do ortho, which is unfortunate that it is on the bottom of my list. lol, fml.

Ophthalmology (yaaaaas), GI, physical medicine, thoracic surgery, radiology

My list is actually kinda all over the place

I decided to re-take this quiz a few days before I head off to medical school (I think I took it a year and a half ago last time), and these were my 90+% matches:

Thoracic Surgery: 94%
Neurological Surgery: 91%
IM - Infectious Disease: 90%
General Surgery: 90%

Does anyone else find it odd that in the additional information section for plastics, it says "competitiveness of residency: Low"

I forgot I even created this thread. I'll post a thorough update when I've decided on a specialty for sure. I started 3rd year at the end of June, and so far I'm fairly certain I'll end up applying to gen surg.

FWIW, the naivety I was alluding to in the original post doesn't change much (or really at all) during the first two years. The pre-clinical part of med school is too removed from actual medicine to really give you any insight into what certain specialties are like. There's no substitute for 3rd year (which has been a blast so far).

I found the quiz to be completely useless. My results had both Thoracic Surgery and Dermatology as tied for first place. Neither of those is the field that I'm in, but more importantly, in what universe could the same personality type be suitable for both dermatology, the best lifestyle specialty, and thoracic, the worst? Neurosurgery was close behind as a choice for me, a field I never remotely considered.

Interestingly enough, the specialty that I'm in, and the related one that I considered but rejected, are down towards the bottom at 80% each.

Optho. Lol. So far from what I'm interested in.

I took this test back in 2013 just before the beginning of my Freshmen year, my results are in the first page.

Right now I'm a Junior and decided to take this again. I'll most likely take this again before I matriculate to Medical School. Here are my top 10 results:

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 98% Personality Match

Radiology - Radiation Oncology 95% Personality Match

Pediatrics 95% Personality Match

Emergency Medicine 95% Personality Match

Preventative Medicine - Aerospace 94% Personality Match

Internal Medicine - Pulmonary Disease 91% Personality Match

Internal Medicine - Nephrology 91% Personality Match

Internal Medicine - Medical Oncology 91% Personality Match

Internal Medicine - Hematology 91% Personality Match

Preventative Medicine - Public Health and General 89% Personality Match

I got 89% Pediatrics for my top choice, which is pretty spot on. i loved my experience shadowing a pediatrician and a pediatric surgeon :)

My top 5, pretty spot on actually:

Emergency Medicine 89% Personality Match

Plastic Surgery 88% Personality Match

Internal Medicine - Gastroenterology 87% Personality Match

Orthopaedic Surgery 87% Personality Match

Thoracic Surgery 86% Personality Match

What in the world!?!?! I am really hoping this isn't accurate... But if it is, then I'm the next space cadet :D

Not sure how accurate this test actually is, a little skeptical to be honest but I'm still in UG so we'll see what my results are when I'm in med school and when I specialize....

Internal Medicine – Medical Oncology 99%

Internal Medicine – Hematology 98%

Obstetrics and Gynecology 97%

Internal Medicine – Nephrology 94%

Internal Medicine- Infectious Diseases 94%

Thoracic Surgery 94%

General Surgery 94%

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 94%

Radiology – Radiation Oncology 93%

Psychiatry 93%

Plastic Surgery 92%

Internal Medicine- Pulmonary Disease 90%

Orthopaedic Surgery 89%

Nuclear Medicine 89%

Neurological Surgery 88%

I honestly don't think I'll ever be interested in psych or plastics....leaning toward thoracic or general surgery.

This was really good.

Interventional Radiology70% Personality Match-
LOL I am very interested in this, interested enough that I reached out to a few IR docs and spoke with them at length about IR.

Obstetrics and Gynecology70% Personality Match- Absolutely Hate OB.

Nuclear Medicine70% Personality Match
- Dont know much about what they do.

Neurology70% Personality Match- Like thi
s- would opt to do fellowship->NIL

Orthopaedic Surgery69% Personality Match- LoL.
Never quite thought of this seriously.

Internal Medicine - Pulmonary Disease68% Personality Match-
> I dont like that IM gets dumped on by the rest of the hospital.

Neurological Surgery68% Personality Match
-> I also Love this, but not sure if I want to do spines for the rest of my life.

-------------------------------------------

Bottom List
Internal Medicine - Hematology55% Personality Match- Nope

Radiology - Radiation Oncology55% Personality Match- Nope

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation54% Personality Match- Completely Nope

Internal Medicine - Medical Oncology53% Personality Match- Nope

Family Medicine50% Personality Match- Completely Nope.

Good Survey!

Top matches. I'm surprised because although I'm not in med school yet I have had no real interest in these from what I have read about them.

Dermatology - 79% Personality Match
Internal Medicine - Pulmonary Disease - 78% Personality Match
Radiology - Diagnostic - 78% Personality Match
Medical Genetics - 78% Personality Match
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation - 77% Personality Match
Ophthalmology - 77% Personality Match

Bottom matches. Two of the fields I have had some interest in are neurology and general IM.

Surgery - General - 67% Personality Match
Preventative Medicine - Aerospace - 67% Personality Match
Thoracic Surgery - 66% Personality Match
Urology - 65% Personality Match
Neurology - 64% Personality Match
Internal Medicine - 62% Personality Match

Not a huge difference in match percentage between the top and bottom so I don't think it says much about my specialty desire.

well this is interesting

Just took this. Top 5:

Internal Medicine - Hematology 100% Personality Match

Internal Medicine - Rheumatology 90% Personality Match

Internal Medicine - Pulmonary Disease 90% Personality Match

Internal Medicine - Nephrology 90% Personality Match

Internal Medicine - Medical Oncology 90% Personality Match

General surgery and Peds were 90%. I have definitely been interested in heme/onc for a while (did my capstone project on cancer).

Bottom 5:

Anesthesiology 70% Personality Match

Preventative Medicine - Aerospace 70% Personality Match

Internal Medicine - Gastroenterology 60% Personality Match

Internal Medicine - Cardiology 60% Personality Match

Family Medicine 50% Personality Match

Which is funny because I definitely think a flight surgeon tour could be cool, and anesthesiology is badass. But I get why they're in the bottom.

Cool to see the update from OP! My Top 5:

Radiology - Diagnostic 72%
Internal Medicine - Infectious Diseases 67%
Pediatrics 67%
Family Medicine 67%
Emergency Medicine 67%

Bottom 5:

Internal Medicine - Medical Oncology 56%
Surgery - General 56%
Radiology - Radiation Oncology 56%
Colon and Rectal Surgery 56%
Urology 53%

Interesting because ID and EM are my main interests at this point, and Urology is something that I just cannot imagine myself being interested in at all. Though I suppose I really don't know much of anything yet. I also never get strong answers from these types of quizzes because I tend not to pick extremes on the scoring scale

What I'm actually considering:
...

Congrats to all my c/o 2017 peeps! Thanks for the bump, @sinombre. I'm curious to see how you all matched compared to our old posts. After taking time off for family, it's about time for me to lock-in that specialty choice for visiting rotations and ERAS. So I'll be PMing my original reply to this post if you guys see and like it, way too easily identified these days.

Not sure how PM&R and Medical genetics got in the top five. Don't sound interesting to me at all. Bottom I suppose I could agree with, but I think radiology would be interesting.

Top Five:

1. IM-Medical Oncology: 83% Personality Match- I shadowed in HONC and LOVED it. I also find my hospice volunteering, which sees a lot of terminal cancer patients, very rewarding. Definitely something I could see myself doing as a career.
2. IM-Hematology: 80% Personality Match. I wonder why this specialty quiz didn't combine these two into Heme/Onc, considering this is the most established and common pathway.
3. Pediatrics: 79% Personality Match. I worked in early childhood education for a long time. I love kids and started thinking about medical school rather sold on Peds. My first choice at this (very early) point.
4. IM-Nephrology: 74% Personality Match. Something I hadn't thought of, but think I might like.
5. Radiology-Diagnostic: 74% Personality Match. Another great field I could really see myself enjoying long term. I think I might want more patient contact than this field wound necessarily offer, however.

Bottom Five:

1. Preventative Medicine- Public Health and General: 47% Personality Match.- To be honest, I really don't know enough about this field to comment on why I think I may or may not like it.
2. ENT: 47% Personality Match. No surprises here. I shadowed in the OR which I thought was nice for a day, but definitely not for a career.
3. Family Medicine: 46% Personality Match. I was very surprised this one wound up so low on the list. Definitely something I think I would like, even just because of the long-term patient relationships.
4. IM-Pulmonary Disease: 41% Personality Match. Another surprise considering all of the other IM subspecialties were quite high on the list. Maybe because the most common pathway is Pulm/CCM and I don't love the ICU?
5. Nuclear Medicine: 39% Personality Match. Don't know enough about it to comment.

I have my eye on Psychiatry (or Child & Adolescent Psych), Peds/a Peds subspecialty or Medical Genetics.

Including fellowship, I have been in pulmonary-critical care for almost 29 years, and only 83% personality match at #10. Hematology was my worst subject in the IM boards 29 years ago and its my highest match at 90%. I never even considered anesthesiology and it's the second highest match....I guess 83% is close enough.

Never heard of cardiliogy. Is it competitive?

Far too competitive for me, since I apparently can't spell it. Good thing we aren't a good match for each other!

Obligatory "how much do you bench?" comment

BMI of 17. ;) Aka I don't bench

Interestingly I revised my responses based on what I feel like now (certainly biased but still fun) and my top 5 became: plastics, gen surg, optho, IM-endocrine/metabolism (why?! I hated metabolism more than ANY ofter subject in all of medical school), thoracic surgery. Ortho moved up to 78%.

Yeah, but mine are all scattered to the wind. Why does it go neurology, aerospace, psychiatry, then radiology. It looks like I picked them randomly out of a hat.

If you can handle the jokes from the guys, you actually can do ortho as a tiny female. (Or at least match... haha)

I figured you had to be a woman, but I didn't want to assume. I find the stereotype hilarious, because of the 7 orthopedic surgeons I've worked with, only 1 was what you'd call a meat head or a jock. The rest of them were skinny guys who just liked ortho.

Yeah, mine are all IM subspecialties. Gen Surg and Peds follow with the same percentage though, so who knows?
