Oh I don't know. I am not terribly serious about the whole idea of putting it on there. It's a network-almost like an online pre-vet club 🙂. It was just a random thought. I have learned a lot about vet stuff in general from being on here. So I just thought I'd ask-aka random thought.

I wouldn't. But, if asked in an interview something really specific, like... "how can you name all 28 vet schools?" (assuming that most applicants can't) then I would mention the forum briefly...

Haha, in my acceptance phone call to OSU I was flat out asked asked if I was on SDN..one interviewer must have put everything together and recognized me with my applicantion and my posts. 😳

Just beware, it is possible that adcom's are on these forums (whether lurkers or members)!

Interesting! I wonder how they figured it out though. Do you really think that just based it on posts and guessed it was you?

Most likely, yes. I am probably the only person they interviewed this year who lives in Ohio that volunteered in South Africa. I also talked about my experiences in South Africa in my interview, application, and then on these forums.

a joke that i cracked in another thread was quoted in the financial aid talk of the recent interview i had... i'd have been mortified except that i'm (perhaps delusional-y) clinging to my anonymity.

I'm the one that called her, as well as interviewed her. It is extremely easy to figure out who is who when there are only a few people interviewing at one time on a certain day. As well as having people talk about their experiences, it's not too terribly hard to put together.

Ahhh...I understand your post above now-because you are an adcom. So, this network definately doesn't apply? Do you see it as more a chat room I guess then an activity?

So you're saying it would not be in my best interests to start the "Top 10 Reasons Why I Should Not Be Admitted To Veterinary School" thread.

Technically, I am not on the admissions committee, but I do do interviews.

My opinion is that SDN is definitely a helpful tool for applicants, but it isn't really an activity that should be put on an application. The applications are long - each one was about 50 pages - and so I think it's best to condense/only put down what is important. For example - if you have been on the Dean's List every quarter, I prefer when they write Dean's List in Awards and list all of the quarters as well as whatever description in the description area, as opposed to entering each quarter as a separate award. Certainly don't rely on any of my opinions as fact though, as each person that reads applications/interviews is different!

Wait, Dean's List actually counts for something? I figured pretty much every applicant would be on the Dean's List so I left it off figuring it'd be redundant.

While anyone can join, not everyone stays active and has a genuine interest. And you can definitely tell from posts how much interest a person has.

That said, i still try to keep whatever bit of anonymity i supposedly have, cause if i say something dumb i dont want it to count against me 😛

The benefit of SDN is more like having a good(great?) pre-vet advisor. You can come here and ask almost any question you want and get a reasonably useful answer. You also have the resource of seeing what has and hasn't worked for students over the course of a few years.

Have a question about OSU? We have a bunch of current OSU students here who can answer it for you. Same applies for pretty much every other school out there. No advisor will be able to answer specific questions as well.

Weren't planning to apply to florida because of the nutrition requirement? Dont worry about it, there are half a dozen schools were you can take it online, and you can even wait until you have been offered admissions before you have to enroll in it.

It just makes the whole application process that much easier.

I was really just using it as an example. They will have your transcripts and therefore know your grades so whether or not you put it on your application really won't matter. It's just that when people have those chronic awards/honors/clubs and they list them all individually you just have to read through several pages of the same thing.

I completely agree with David.

I'm just a freshman in undergrad, so I have a lot of time to change my mind about whether I really want to pursue vet med. However, I believe I have a much stronger idea of what I am getting myself into by spending time on these forums- I know that I know more about the different schools than any other pre-vet I have met at my very veterinary-heavy undergrad.

I would have never thought of this on my own, but now that the question has been asked: I might consider putting SDN on my application if I was a moderator, or held some position of power here for an extended period of time. If nothing else, it would be something unique. c:

I 3rd david594! My school produces little to no pre-vet students. Most are pre-med, pharm, or research. I had to do the research and take it to my advisor and pretty much advise him. Wish I would've found this site a few years ago!!

I wish I had joined this forum a few years sooner - I might be blogging as a veterinary student now. It's certainly been very, very helpful. That, and I'm sure most of us enjoy helping the new kids after we figure out what's going on ourselves!

Yes, I get the value of SDN to an individual applicant. It's a great place to ask questions and share experience - which is obviously why I'm here. However, I still don't think it should have any bearing on your acceptance into vet school and I would never include it on my VMCAS.
