Second look at programs?

Hey everyone. I'm wondering about the benefits, if any, of taking a second look at programs--of course, it might help one make up their mind about a program, but does it in any way strengthen chances of matching there? Any ideas?

totally agree. We both matched in EM but I suspect it is similar across specialties. It might confirm your sincere interest, but probably wouldnt bump you up the list much. An important point to keep in mind is not to be misled by a program eagerly welcoming your return visit. I know quite a few people who 'second looked' their first choice (including program arranged realtor visits, hospital time, etc in addition to lots of correspondence with the PD) and didnt match there. A couple of these folks traveled all the way across the country with their spouse to make the visit, had a great time, and came home confident they'd match at their respective top spots, only to end up someplace else. In general, unless you are truly undecided, I think a second look isnt worth the time and money.

One program told me they specifically DIScourage 2nd looks because it sends them the message that they either did not do a good enough presenting themselves the first time or that the applicant needed more time to see how "wondereful" their program is. That is, if the applicant "loved" a program enough to rank it very high, they would not need to see it twice.

Only if it will help you make up your mind about a program. I don't think it will bump you up the program's ROL though.

I would agree that second looks are more for the applicant and not the program. However, I have heard several poeple (2 actually), whom I know personally, tell me they got verbal commitments from the PD on a second look for a match and it worked out that way.
