Anyone have any insight about what to wear for second looks? I will be rounding with the team, going to conferences, and probably meeting the PD. Do I wear a suit, just shirt and tie, or do I even bring my white coat?

I just wore a shirt and tie. Maybe if you are nervous, just email one of the chiefs and ask. I believe that's what I did.

Dress in shirt, tie, slacks (look professional as you would on an interview). If the hospital requires white coats be worn on rounds then they will provide you a coat to wear. Otherwise, do not bring your med-student white coat unless the program says so.

Hi
I went on two second looks and I asked prior to coming, "should I bring the white coat?"
They said yes...
When i was doing my sub I at a place, they seemed to provide their second lookers with white coats. The other second lookers on my second look day did not have white coats--I don't think it made a difference either way.

Uh, don't email anybody what to wear. You don't want your program you are considering to realize you are so clueless that you need help with such a simplistic question.

I wouldn't want an intern who didn't even know how to dress himself, much less figure out a differential diagnosis for chest pain.

boo hoo. now you are really starting to make me cry. I guess that UCSF and the Brigham and other such crappy programs didn't realize I was "so clueless" and couldn't dress myself until after I did my second look and they give me a call around when my rank list was due. I am sure that Barry and Mike would be very pleased to know how well you are selling Pitt Cardiology with your magnetic personality on this message board.

I've been on one second look already, with 2 more to follow, and all of them asked me in an e-mail to please bring a white coat. On the one I went to already, another girl showed up in a full suit with an attache case for a second look and she kept being confused with the actual interviewees that were there for the day. She looked very professional, though, but I think the PD and staff seemed surprised when they met her - I think they were expecting business casual and a white coat?

Hope this helps... and I don't think this question is stupid to ask programs. I doubt any program coordinator/secretary is going to run to her PD after you ask her and say, "WOW Joe Shmoe called to ask what to wear on his second look here. I bet he kills 5 patients on his first day as an intern, what an idiot!"

Good luck with your second looks and good luck in the match as well.

Of course you can probably get away with asking, but anybody who is over 20 years of age, should figure out for themselves what to wear

i think what you would wear on the wards minus your white coat is the best bet. i'm planning on bringing my white coat just in case, but not wearing it when i walk in.
