I'd like to know what exactly goes on during second looks. Do we meet with tha chairman and/or the program director. Or do we just meet with the residents to ask questions?

Depends on the program.
If you are lucky you will meet with the chairman or people that you interviewed with.
However, most of the time you will be just meeting the residents.
Remember there will be medical students who are doing their rotations and schedule for that day will be assigned to them.
Thus, I believe it is a crap shoot that you will meet anybody significant.

Anyone out there have a better understanding????

I went on a second look and am planning on going to a second program for a second look. It is mostly to help you decide if the program fits you/ or help you make a decision in you feel equal about two places. Some programs may let you meet up with or follow an attending on the committee if you request to do so. But for the most part, it's not a time to try to impress the chair or program director, they have pretty much already made up their mind about everyone by now. It will allow you to let them know that you are strongly considering their program and that can work in your favor. My second look day consisted of mostly one-on-one time with residents in the OR and at lunch, also got some time to talk with a few attendings. Hope this helps.

So then why not just write a letter to the PD/chair expressing your strong feelings for their program and wanting to go there? What do people feel about that, especially since you may not meet with anyone significant or in the decision process, but you will get your point across in a letter to the appropriate people?

I recently went for a second look. I went with the idea of just letting the program know that I was very interested, and also to have a chance to talk to a few more of the residents and also see the OR. I was lucky enough to run into one of the attendings who I had previously interviewed with, and then stopped by the PD's office to say hello. She was very friendly, and actually sat down to talk with me about my plans for the match. She also inquired about my intern plans, and offered her opinion on the programs I had interviewed at. All in all, I feel very glad that I went, even though it involved travel and airfare... but, this program is a clear front runner for my rank list, and as I see it, every little bit helps.

Good luck

John

What type of attire do you suggest for a second look? Is a suit appropriate, or will a shirt & tie suffice? Thanks.

Ask the PD or Coordinator what you will be doing or tell them what you would like to do. You can meet with the PD, residents, or both. If you will be in the OR with the residents then go casual. Spending time with the PD only probably requires a tie and jacket

Good Luck!😎
