What do you all think about second looks? Has anyone heard that it is necessary to go on a second look at certain programs to be considered high on there list?

my understanding is that in recent years second looks had become increasingly "required" - meaning that though programs weren't overtly stating it, they were starting to rely on them to gauge applicant interest in the program. and it was a huge added stress and expense for the applicant. that's why the nrmp sent out a mailing to the programs this season (which our dean sent to us), stating that second looks are not to be requested of applicants and shouldn't place any students at an advantage/disadvantage.

having said that, i still think many programs encourage second looks. and if you aren't going to some of your top programs, i might contact them expressing interest and explaining why you aren't visiting (funds, time, etc.). personally, i am planning on going to re-visit 2 programs, not only to express interest but also to figure out which of them i am going to rank first...

I would not say that a second look is required. Yes, it definately lets programs know that you are interested, but in reality probably does very little to boost your likelyhood of matching. Our program encourages second looks for the applicants' benefits, to see things they do not get to see on an interview day.

When I was applying, I did 2 (out of 10 applied programs) second visits of places that were going to be in the top 3 on my rank list. It was definately worth it. I was able to spend part of a day on the unit and in didactics; I was also able to meet with a faculty in an area of interest for me. Also, it gave me an opportunity to speak face-to-face with the program director again. In the end, I think it re-inforced my interest in those programs and I did end up ranking them high on my list. Both programs provided assistance (paid for hotel, meals) so there was little inconvenience on my part.

So, I would recommend it; but I don't think it is necessary unless you are very interested and planning to rank high.
