Second looks?

To those who have been through the process or who know:

Does anyone know how the second looks work? Does the candidate call the program and ask about getting one or does the residency program invite the applicant?

Is the second look mostly to see if you are serious about the program or is it for the program to see if they really want to rank you?

Some programs may offer you the opportunity to take a second look but it isn't mandatory to match somewhere. This is especially the case if the program is far away. The second look is pretty informal and it's an opportunity for you to get a better feel for a program. Remember you will be spending the majority of your time at this place for 3-4 years. If you are particularly interested in a specific program and want to do everything you can do to match there, it's not a bad idea to do a second look or two. You shouldn't do it because you feel like you have to. In certain fileds they really expect applicants to do them but that's not the case in anesthesia. The applicant sets up the second look.

I believe the "second look" should be used only if you still have valid questions which you need to have answered, desired to or if you feel an unrelenting urge to see something that wasn't shown during the tour.

If you are going just to have your face seen someone may read that as being sycophantic verses being merely intensely interested. In this situation you could be hurting yourself.

Then again, I could be absolutely wrong.
