The first time I took the MCAT in June of 2018, I received a disappointing 506 (129,125,127,125) or 68th percentile. I recently got my scores back for the August 3, 2019 MCAT exam, in which I ended up scoring a relatively balanced 515 (129,127,129,130) or 92nd percentile. I have just finished submitting my secondaries, and I began to wonder how medical schools would view my old score. I realize that some schools average the MCAT while others emphasize the most recent or highest score. Combined with my 3.93 GPA, should this new MCAT score help amend the previously lackluster attempt?

Depends on the school how they technically view it, but every school will be able to see all scores. Good job on the new score and it will make a difference. It will only affect you positively so don’t worry about it.

Thanks for the responses! I guess I will just have to wait and see! I assume the place I interviewed at last cycle will accept me now, but nothing is a guarantee.

Good job! I think you will be okay, a friend of mine who had average stats/background and a 507 received 3 MD acceptances.

Congrats on your much higher MCAT score. That can only be a positive.

However, schools will ask you how you've improved on your application since the last cycle. Make sure you have a lot of other accomplishments to point to, in addition to the higher MCAT score, when you answer that question on your next cycle. Carry on!

Congratulations! Your 515 definitely makes your application as a whole look a lot better. And you're right- taking the MCAT twice does generally look worse than taking it once and doing well, but it's not the end of the world. Many medical schools will ask how your application has changed since last cycle, and that's a great way to play up your MCAT score.

You're now an extremely competitive applicant! A 3.93 and 515 makes you competitive at all but top, top medical schools.

Update: Received 3 IIs thus far. I was complete everywhere at 9/9. Only accepted 2 IIs due to scheduling, but I'm expecting some more in the near future. Good cycle so far!
