Hello all,
I just was hoping for a little advice. I am currently an attending in physical medicine, but I am realizing that I was probably meant to be a psychiatrist, since the aspects of physical medicine that I am best at (and enjoy) are all the psych issues.
What is the likelihood of me getting a second residency in psychiatry? Also, I was a transitional intern, would I have to repeat the entire intern year?
A few stats:
1. D.O.
2. #2 in my class and >260 on USMLE
3. Did my PM&R residency in the military, and still owe two more years.
4. Non traditional student, had a career before medicine to begin with (not geriatric, but not 24 either).
Any advice, would appreciate!!!
Thank you!

Your odds are very good I would say. The military duty would limit you to military training, or delay this 2 years.

Your internship should “count” if your internship was ACGME. You will need 4 months of medicine, 2 months of neuro …. (see RRC requirements for psychiatry) by the end of 36 months training. This means things may eat into some of your elective time depending upon what you have already done in training. Age is not a big factor, but your prior director’s letter will be important.

You might have a problem with programs that rely exclusively (or in large part) on medicare funding to pay for resident salaries since you would not be eligible to be paid via that route.

I don't think you'll have a problem getting in.

Though I do think you're going to be greatly frustrated by the number of psychiatrists ordering an IM consult for a BP of 135/92, and as a resident, will be blown off when you try to convince your attending to not order one. That was painful for me, but I bet would be worse for you given your training. Thankfully I haven't seen one that bad in some time (the university psychiatrists are a few notches above the ones I've seen in the community and residency).

At the same time, I do think a number of attending psychiatrists will rely upon you, in a good way, to handle the psychiatric cases where the patient is medically on the rocks.

sorry to bump this thread, but I was wondering if things have changed since 2013? I am very interested in applying to psych as a second residency

nothings changed. there's still a shortage and psych is not too hard to enter.

Hello,
I know it's been a while since I posted that last message, I just wanted to say that I was lucky enough to be selected to do psychiatry starting July 2016. (I'm Navy and I did the military match).
I just wanted to thank all the individuals who gave me encouragement who were from this site. A lot of people were discouraging me by telling me I couldn't get a second residency, or telling me to get out of the military and try to match there, or join the Army, or just stay a staff physiatrist, etc. etc. etc., but the kind words I received from some individuals here helped me press on.
Thank you all again!

Hi I also have completed internship and residency and am now in addiction medicine. How long would it take to get board certified in psychiatry ?

Three years for board eligibility, which I presume is the real question you’re asking. Board certification would be ~6 months after that.

Nobody does neuropathology, but assuming you matched as a PGY2 Then you would get credit for an intern year. I presume you would’ve already done at least two months of neurology.
