How possible is it to do a second residency in the Air Force (in a very competitive field)? I have gradually come to the conclusion that I hate the field I am currently in residency for, and wish that I had gone with the other field that was lingering in the back of my mind when applying (although there were actually no slots for it that year to apply for). I have every intention of finishing my current residency, but I was wondering if programs really dislike having people do second residencies.

This is actually somewhat common in certain specialties (i.e. Derm, Anesthesia, etc.). Some FPs will go back into residency. In general, you must complete a utilization tour for at least 2 years before reapplying. There are some exceptions to this rule. If you leave residency before finishing, you will certainly need to do a GMO/FS tour for at least 2 years before going back into a second residency

The military is probably the greatest place in the world to realize you screwed up picking your first residency. Not only is it easy to get another one (after the utilization tour of course) because you get bonus points for all those years in service, but you get attending pay to do it. I'd count your lucky stars, this'll work out a lot better for you than if you were a civilian. I know a number of people who openly state they'd have never been able to match into a derm (or equivalent) residency in the civilian match but could in the military.

Hypothetical - How likely is the Army to let an EM doc switch and do a second residency in Surgery...
1. After completion of the EM training?
2. In the middle of the EM training?

Just running options...

If one does a FTIS fellowship does s/he get attending pay? They would be at least board eligible.

Yes, you get Peds attending pay. If your payback from HPSP/Residency is done, you can sign an MSP prior to entering the fellowship and payback the MSP during fellowship. I know it seems like a scam, but it is what happens. The key is that you sign the paperwork BEFORE fellowship starts. One day into fellowship and payback becomes consecutive with your training obligation.

Look at post #2.

It certainly applies to that situation. As for odds, no one can say as the needs of the military and the applicant pool changes every year.

Doesn't the Army have a much greater need for surgery than em? If that is true, then I would say the odds are good.
