I've heard rumors that certain programs (vandy, duke, etc) don't contact applicants for an interview unless they show specific interest in the program by contacting the program outside of ERAS with a call, letter, or e-mail.
Is this a common practice? Is there some type of secret application etiquette that must be follwed?

It seems to me that multiple applicants contacting a program outside of ERAS would be an annoyance to the program. It seems that such contact would hurt one's chances of an interview.

Has anyone heard of this going on?

Thanks

I've heard that to get an interview at Duke, you have to call the program director and whisper the secret password into the phone 3 times, with the third time being in French. It also is supposed to be helpful if you can mail them a lock of your hair with a note inside the envelope reading, "This is how interested I am in your program." This is all purely rumor though.

Itys still very early, give it a month or wait for deans letter, if you haven't heard anything, then give them a call.

Yeah, and don't throw away your cute little short white coat either. You will be wearing it for another year, along with some very stylish white pants... all so that the staff can distinguish interns who know nothing from med students who know it all 😛

The program directors of those schools you listed are going to be absolutely elated you mentioned them by name in your post. With 87.65% of SND posters being gunners, those program directors are in for a long year.

What other programs besides Duke require wearing a short coat during intern year? i've heard Emory... any others?

don't know about you, but i'd kind of like to wear a big boy's coat next year.

Actually, Duke medicine interns only wear the short coat, NOT the white pants. The only department still doing the white pants thing at Duke is surgery.

And come on, lets face it, you haven't yet earned your "big boys" coat! 😛

I am an Emory Med student going into medicine, and I assure you that all medicine interns wear the long white coat. In fact here at Emory, only gen surg has to wear the short white coat, albeit for 4 out of their 5 years of residency. Uh...and no white pants anywhere for MDs.

Residents and fellows,

The question is a good one and I can tell you that once you complete residency/fellowship and start looking for your first practice, knowing how to interview will be the difference between you or your competitor landing the job.

We place over 30 physicians a year. Our physicians have consistently told us that our tips have made the difference when interviewing with CEOs, in-house recruiters, and colleagues.

Telephone interview tips

Face-to-face interview tips

All the best,

All the Harvard-based IM programs (BID, BW, MGH) have all the residents wear short coats...in fact, some of the fellows and even the attendings also weat short coats...

UCSF wears the short coat, though there are rumors that it will change.
