hi kids, brand new to this place, studying for step 2...

there have been alot of old posts saying secrets and crush is the same book with a different format, but more recent posts have been heavily favoring secrets. does anyone know if they are still the same? maybe the newer editions have diverged from each other? or do you think its just the question format that people prefer?

thanks for the help.

Don't use either books they are missing so much. Use FA and World. I would maybe supplement with Deja and maybe the FA cases book(really good).

Good luck

I disagree, secrets is great! Perhaps not primary reference, but it's very readable, maybe evn "lighter" reading when u want to study but dont feel like reading something like FA>

Most of my classmates don't use FA. it's LONG and nowhere near as good as the step 1 version.

Also secrets really tells u how to answer the step 2 qs and what they look for, pearls that aren't in books like FA. (Crush was written by the same author as secrets, but in a diff format)

secrets was definetely a good resource and didnt inflict as much emotional trauma as fa and uw did per hour spent studying. i wouldve done it again. First aid, im glad i spent almost no time on, as it was a piece of crap.

so i already bought crush during my 3rd year, is it worth to get secrets as well? i like the question books, because i can trick myself into studying when i dont really want to. im using UW also, but very leisurely, im not taking step 2 for a couple of months. thanks for the input!

Call me crazy, but I thought First Aid for 2CK was great. I also like Boards & Wards, which would be my first choice if I was low on time.

Didn't like what I saw of Crush. Didn't look at Secrets.

I thought secrets was very good. I had crush as well but used secrets since I like the question format, but its the same exact info. Getting secrets my not be a bad ideas, it would allow you to test your crush knowledge.

I used secrets and UW and was very, very happy I looked at secrets. Went through it twice, once before UW, then after UW right before the test. That book is a MUST for step 2. I'll post my scores when I get them.

I used secrets and I found that to be a good fast study source. Crush is too superficial to be helpful. World is amazing.

What is the full name of the Secrets book and the author? Where are most people getting a copy of this book?

Thanks

I read most of Crush during the two days preceding my step 2 exam. While it misses a LOT of material, I noticed about 4-5 questions on my exam that I was able to answer immediately due to the little bold sentences in Crush. Overall, it was much less helpful than Step Up Medicine, but OK if you have extra time to kill.

see this is what i dont get, some people say crush and secrets are the same word for word, others say crush is not enough. grrr. i wish they carried these books in barnes and noble so i could compare them for myself. i think im just gonna suck it up and blow another 40 bucks on a stupid book. does anyone else have like 3 bookshelves filled with crap? i cant stand to look at it anymore.
i really do appreciate all the feedback, though 🙂

check to see if your school's bookstore carries the books, so that you can take a look at it before buying. I'm pretty sure mine does.

don't do it man. i did that. i got an extra couple of pictures @ the back for 45 dollars. nice investment. they are THE SAME book. brochert was a very smart man, reformatted the same material and resold it to saps like me. i bought it, read the heme chapter, thought it looked awfully familiar, checked secrets, hey they're the same, word for word! golfpro guy said secrets was lacking. negative. supplement with usmleworld for success. secrets is little and easier to carry around. if you like to write a lot in books, get crush. you can buy mine. 40 bucks 😛 i push secrets on everyone. it's a very excellent book, and stays in my silly white coat pocket even today.
