Hello all
I will be applying to schools next summer and need to get started on my observation hours. I am filling out apps for hospitals, but so far no results. I really want to get in-patient out of the way first. Any suggestions?

I don't know that area but nursing homes usually have a PT. SNFs fall under the inpatient category. I found it was a lot easier to get hours at the nursing home I volunteered at than the hospital.

Ahh. I thought about that, but i leave it as last resort...

Hospitals in my area are generally pretty saturated with volunteers and it is tough to get a spot in a timely manner if you don't have some kind of connection.

You want to try to contact rehab departments directly, by phone or in person, if you can and try to set something up without going through their volunteer department.

talk to nursing homes, I got my inpatient through SNF.

Call up or email the PT department of the hospital directly (PT supervisor). If they agree to take you on you can usually expedite the volunteer on-boarding process and get through going through the volunteer department without any trouble other than doing the necessary paperwork and medical clearance. It's easier to get in when it's not the summer time in my experience. I live in NYC and it was surprisingly easy as long as you get your foot in the door. You can travel within that hospital system volunteering everywhere once you're officially a volunteer. I feel like they completely ignore paper applications so I wouldn't bother with those. 🙂 Once I secured a spot, I just filled out the application for the volunteer department and went straight through the medical clearance process.

For me, these were the hardest hours to get. Contact the HR department by phone and ask them if they can help you/point you in the right direction. Stay persistent and you should have no problem.

Squeaky wheels get the grease 🙂

Thaaank you guys! I guess the theme is to be persistent and if all fails do nursing homes. Also arcadia advisor told me home care counts as inpatient, would that vary from school to school?
