I wanted to post a thread to seek out advice from those who may have had a similar experience to myself. First I should mention that I do have an interest in acute care (although I have not yet had my Am Care rotation, which I have next month). I interviewed at 7 programs, and I have two places that I am stuck between ranking #1 and #2, both of which I was equally impressed by. One of the programs is at a well-respected university teaching hospital (Temple University Hospital in Philly). I'm certain this would provide me with an excellent acute care training experience. The other program is a teaching VA medical facility in the same city, which I feel would also be a great well-rounded training experience.

I'm somewhat gravitating towards the VA program as my top choice; however, my concern is that if I do complete a residency at the VA that it will limit my opportunities of securing a PGY-2 or a clinical pharmacy specialist job outside of the VA system if I chose to go that route. Also, it would be preferable for me not to relocate very far after residency to secure employment, which may prove to be difficult if I would plan to the stay within VA system. Unfortunately, I'm not entirely certain what setting (VA vs. private hospital) I want to practice in for the rest of my career.

I was wondering if anyone could share their thoughts/experiences that may have had a similar decision to make when ranking. Also, it would be helpful to hear from those that have completed a residency at a VA program and what impact it has had on their careers (positive and negative, if any). Thanks!!

Will PM you. I am familiar with both programs, and completed one of them.
