Hey Everyone,
I want to let you all know my situation and maybe get some advice. Im a Senior this year at NC A&T majoring in Lab Animal Science. My GPA is 3.15 and I have a whipping GRE score of 950  I am taking the test again next month to hopefully score higher. Anyway, I have had internships every summer of college, lots of EC activities, and some decent awards. I plan on applying to MSU, WSU (that one is in state) and Tuskegee. Im in the process of filling out VMCAS and could use some advice on the personal statement, and some general insight from anyone who would like to offer it. What do you think my chance are of being accpeted? How can I improve myself? Also, I know that many school are not looking for any more kids interested in private practice. Most of my esperience is in Large Animal, but i have some experience in research, (I really like aquatic research) and some small private practice, which i really like also. So I see myself going into aquatic research, of the non-mammal type or private practice (small animal). so what do ya think?

I'm not sure if by MSU you mean Michigan or Mississippi.

As far as aquatic (non-mammal) stuff goes, you would do well to consider Mississippi. Catfish farming is way big business in Mississippi and the vet school does a ton of research in this area.

As far as your personal statement, interviews go I would give one bit of advice. Don't make the blunder I've seen so many potential vet students make. Do not tell them something along the lines of "I've always liked animals more than people, so I'd like to be a vet."

That will be a big strike against you. The fact is that in order to be a good vet, in any area of vet med, you really need to have good people skills. Remember, no doggy ever wrote a check. It's the owner of the doggy you have to interact with.

Emphasize your animal experience and skills (this will show them that you have worked with animals etc and that you do indeed like it....that way you are less likely to drop out of vet school halfway through when you discover you don't really like it), but even more so emphasize your ability to work with people and be part of a team, etc.

Good luck.

I don't think schools are necessarily uninterested in students wanting to go in to private practice. They do like people with diverse animal experiences, and they do like to know your interest in veterinary medicine is sincere.

But the one big thing you can do is raise your GRE score. The average GRE falls in the 68 percentile at Illinois. And since your GPA is below average, you definitely want to get an above average GRE.

Good luck!

hi all 🙂 I'm new to the boards...thought i'd put my two cents in!

the one main thing I can suggest - is make *sure* that youre VMCAS is as impressive as possible - make an absolutely amazing personal statement, recheck tomake sure there are no grammatical/spelling errors (seems like an easy task, but you would be surprised), take it to your campus' 'writing lab' if it has one, ask your friends to give you pointers on your personality... etc... The hardest part of applying for me, was Wisconsins supplemental (i think it was WI...maybe IA..hmm..) they asked me to list my worst charactistics!

and most of all - dont' get frustrated... if you don't get in the first year, work hard throughout the year and apply again, persistance will help. I have a friend who has applied to CSU for the past 4 years....and finally got in this year. Don't give up 😀
