"Selectivity" in Orgo! - Do we need to know?!?!?!

hey all,

a friend of mine busted out a question on selectivity, but i never encountered it during my prep.

do we need to know about it? if so, what do we need to know besides:

selectivity = reactivity/#of sites available to react

I'd say know the basics. Br is more selective than F. In decreasing order of reaction rates... F>Cl>Br>I

halogen reactivity: F>Cl>Br>I
Halogen selectivity: I>Br>Cl>F
so F and Cl are very reactive but not selective so they are more likely to add to primary carbons.
