Hey guyz. After a long time of thinking, I've decided to give up medicine. I liked my first year of school, but while here in Los Angeles, I've noticed that there are other things out there. Just yesterday, I got a chance to meet Hal Fishman from Channel 5 news, and I realized that I think I should try to do TV. So I'm taking a year off from school to try and become a news anchor, or just see if I can get my foot in the door. Have any of you guys tried leaving school for a bit just to see what else is out there?????

Are kidding me Hero?
You can still be an MD and do TV!!! Dr Sanjay Gupta is a regular correspondent on CNN, a freelance writer for Time Magazine, and a neurosurgeon on the side. Cynthia Macfadden of ABC is a lawyer who graduated Columbia Law. Lots of TV anchor people have unrelated professional designations. It can make you better at your job in the media. Just think before you do anything rash.
You can always pursue your TV dreams after you graduate

Just my 2 pennies

Aren't you being a tad impulsive? You worked 4 years to get into med school, and obviously did well. Now, you see what seems to be a fresh piece of meat, and you are all over it. It's like you are looking to have an affair when you already have 2 kids...are you sure you thought about switching careers long and hard?
In your OP, you did not mention that you were miserable, so I don't think you should take off med school...

Also, you can do med school and TV (Dr. Ian Smith was another example).

Good luck

I agree with the previous two posters. A medical degree is so marketable. There are tons of medical doctors who don't practice medicine. There is a lot out there besides medicine, but your education will open up many doors. Consulting, health policy, pharmaceuticals, TV, law, education, politics...

Don't do something you'll regret. Don't be one of those people who are always thinking back about what they could have been.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, is the coolest by the way.

huh? Ok - I am not going to give the same response and say "are you crazy" because if you want to take a break then you want to take a break and then thats probably the healthiest thing to do. The above does sound a little contradictory/rash (in that only yesterday you decided to become a news anchor!). However, I guess that doesn't mean you haven't been thinking of leaving for a long time. So my advice is

1) Just don't jump on *anything*/the first thing that comes along just because you are unhappy where you are at now. (which may or may not be what this news anchor stuff is about but it sounded a bit that way from your wording - remember, as a news anchor wording is everything 😉 )

2) If you are going to leave for a year make sure you close as few doors as possible. Can you talk to the school and just 'take a year off' so that if you decide this is a bad decision you can come back in a year? Really, as remote as that possibility might seem now, try to keep as many doors open as possible.

Good luck with whatever you decide. I am perhaps less prone to think you are crazy as I never went into medicine in the first place - so I already saw what 'else' is out there and frnakly, I think it's worth seeing. Having said that I also built a strong career and when I told people I was quitting to go into medicine they also thought I was crazy....only you really know what will make you happy, which is all that really counts. Just (as I said in (2) above) try to make sure if this turns out to be a detour rather than a change in pathway that it's still possible to get back on track with your program... 🙂

You know this means war right 😛

I knew something had to be up when I read that you decided to go into TV news after meeting Hal Fishman - he doesn't even inspire bread to mold!

If anyone does ever get the impulse to go into TV news, pm me for a reality check. That was my previous paycheck for 8 years and it's no bouquet of monkeys, nor a barrel of roses.
