Hi all,

I'm a senior about to graduate, cell biology major, and I'm debating whether or not to take the Kaplan classroom course a lot of my friends recommended, or to just study on my own. I know all the pro's of the actual course...that they give you a vast amount of resources/practice questions/and 8 FL tests plus the 10 AAMC tests, but the cost is absolutely ridiculous. The thing is: I have the review books from a friend who took the Kaplan course last year...including all subject reviews, the flashcards, and the laminated quick study guides. But since practice is really what makes or breaks, i need to get my hands on a lot of practice material.

Since i have the review books, and i think i can push myself hard enough to study on my own, would it be a waste to pay for the course? I would be paying it straight out of pocket (my pocket, not parents'). If so, what books would you guys recommend for practice material? EK or Kaplan's books? (and reasons please, if you have time to give your opinions). Iv'e been reading that both companies are severely lacking in proofreading the books they publish...is there anything else, or should i just deal with all the errors the books contain?

I will be buying the 10 (or is it just 3-10?) AAMC practice tests later in the summer, but i think i should have some kind of subject-specific tests to jump-start before i go straight into doing FL tests (right?), and the review books i have don't contain any subject or topical tests. So, what should i buy for this purpose?? Ek, Kaplan, etc? I was looking at the 1001 questions series from EK, but many ppl say Kaplan questions are more realistic. I will be taking the test in mid-August, so i have adequate time. Please give me your feedback...much appreciated!

The main benefit of a course is the people. You have a support structure with other pre-meds and teachers who will hopefully help you. Fortunately, it sounds like you have some good teachers in the area since other people in your area have recommended Kaplan. Nevertheless, ask to sit in before making a final decision.

Now should you pick self study versus Kaplan, well, that's up to you. Keep in mind that you will mainly be studying on your own. At the end of the day, your own motivation to study will play a far bigger role in your MCAT success than whether you take a course or not.

For materials, I'd check out my schedule thread which includes a list of recommended books.
