Hi...
I have a question about the school system...

Most dental schools require one full year of General Chemistry...it is confusing me...

I finished with my gen chemistry I in the school of quarter system...and did gen chem II in the school of semester system...

Eventually, I did not complete one full year of general chemistry but, i finished with gen chem I and II.

am i eligible for applying to dental school? or I have to take gen chem I again...if I take biochemistry in next semester, is it gonna be fine enough to apply?

Thank you for giving me any tip...

The quarter system always screw things up. I too came from a University that used to be on the quarter system and then converted to the semester system.

To answer your question, dental schools usually requires X amount of credits for specific courses. For example, General Chemistry at University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, requires EIGHT (8) semester credits; for your case, although you've already taken Gen. Chem I & II, but do you not have 8 "semester" credits worth. What you'll have to do in this case is to take another higher level Chemistry course (dental schools will be more than happy to take the credits from this higher level chemistry course and added to your Chemistry course credits already taken) OR retake a General Chemistry I (the semester version) so you'll have at least 8 "semester" credits to fulfill the General Chemistry courses requirement.

Look into the specific dental school that you wish to apply to and look at their courses requirements. For further specific answers, contact them directly.

Thank you Yah-E...

how about taking biochemistry....is it okay as a makeup for general chemistry...or not...? if not, i'm going to take general chem...again

Gobiz,

Taking Biochemistry is a great idea for a lot reasons, but not to substitute for Gen. Chem requirement.

Many dental schools are now having Biochemistry course as a course requirement for application/admissions. For example, both Tufts and Univ. of Minnesota are now requiring a Biochemistry course from their applicants.

I'm afraid your best bet would be to retake a general chemistry course to get it over with. By doing so, first, it would be easy for you since you've already had it once and secondly, it will be a GPA booster, again, since you already had it once.

Now remember, if your current college/university has another chemistry class that interests you, feel free to take that as well. I'm assuming that you're only missing anywhere from 1.7 to 3 "semester" credits worth of general chemistry credits to fulfill the admissions requirement, if there's a two (2) credit Chemistry Laboratory course, maybe you can just take that and fulfill your eight (8) Gen. Chem. course requirements! After all, you already have "some" Gen. Chem. sememster credits, right?! Be cautious, prior to registering for a Chem Lab course, call the dental school of your interests to see if "it" will satisfy their Gen. Chem. requirements?

Good luck 😎
