is it appropriate to send a letter of interest/update to a school you haven't heard anything from? or should you wait for some type of hold status if the particular school has one?

I did that through email and got an interview invite 30 minutes later. It may not help but it won't hurt; just make sure it sounds good.
Some schools with say specifically not to send any additional material, so you better check before you go sending some off. But either way, I feel that it can't hurt your application. I see no reason why you should not send an update letter.
I sent each of them a pdf version of the letter and a pdf of my unofficial transcript as well as sent each a hardcopy version through the mail. About half of them responded to the email with either a brief thank you and "your application is under review... we will contact you" or said that they don't take supplemental information.
It's pretty remarkable that LRAccord624 received an invite directly afterward; I'm hoping for similar results.
What you should include:
- Fall Grades; Spring classes
- EC updates/accomplishments
- Why their mission aligns with your objectives

Yes, I never expected that to happen obviously. It made my day though. Someone declined the interview that was happening at the end of the week, the director of admissions received my email, and then emailed me back. Getting my suit dry-cleaned, a flight, and a hotel was difficult and expensive 3 days in advance, but it was worth it because now that school is my first choice. Just shows you never know what could happen.

What if I dont have any updates to send but still want to express my strong interest in an IS school? I graduated early this yr & am just working a healthcare related job rite now to save some $$$ for pre-medical school expenses. I have some interviews lined up @ OOS schools. But really wud like to attend this particular school due to its location, tuition, & many other factors. I have avg stats & slightly below avg MCAT. i would truly appreciate any input on how`i shud go abt writing an LOI in my situation since I have nothing much to write about other than the reasons why I strongly want to attend this institution. Have such letters ever produced favorable outcomes to any1 out here? Thanks in advance for any guidance u guys can offer!!! 🙂
