hello.

I recently just contacted a podiatrist, but he tells me to start shadowing beginning of august. So I have this question I want to ask,

If I finished shadowing him by the end of August, and let say the latest that I have his letter is end of September, will that considered late for my application?

I have everything ready already, mcat 502, 3.54 cGPA and 3.4 sgpa. I also have letter from my college professors ready too. The only thing I do not have right now is the DPM letter. ahould I still send all of the professors letter in before I have the DPM letter?

You will be fine, a lot of schools will give you interviews before hand but will require the shadowing experience before matriculation. I highly recommend you shadow before any interviews, which you will have done because interviews would start September I believe. Shadowing will give you a lot to talk about at your interview.

Thank you. So I can still get interview even though I don't have enough letter requirement?

It would be better to have all the letters ready beforehand, but I've seen students get interviews while not having a letter from a DPM. You will most likely hand in the letter later.

Depending on the school you want to get into, you can apply after getting the letter as well. Of course, it would be better to apply as early as you can, but September-November isn't really late for the pod cycle ( some people in the past month have been getting acceptances).

For Scholl, however, they will need everything before making the decision of sending you an interview invite.

To elaborate on what ernie044 said, I personally was accepted prior to having my DPM letter finished and submitted. They said in my acceptance package that my acceptance was conditional upon arrival of the letter. Although, I did have a committee letter from my master's program which may have allowed the delay, but nonetheless it does happen.

Feel like I might've asked you this before, but do you think a committee letter would have advantages over individual LORs from professors?

Doing my masters right now and while I have professors lined up to write me LORs, not sure if I should go that route or a committee letter would look better.

Committee letters usually come as a packet including your other letters of recommendation, so there's no mutual exclusivity to worry about.

My committee letter required me to sit down with three of my grad school professors who proceeded to interview me in the same fashion you would get interviewed in medical school. They already knew me personally, but they wanted to dive down deep into why I wanted to be a healthcare professional. They said this process allows them to write a more personal and unique letter rather than the standard letter you may receive from some other professors. They also composed a single letter and each individual elaborated on different sections to it as well. I believe my committee letter held more water due to this process. Therefore, I suppose it depends on how your school goes about doing it. It's possible that what FootAndAnkle said is what you committee may do, which in that case it would be no different from individual letters.

For the professors that interviewed you, were they chosen by you or your department?

You guys are awesome by the way. Thank you. @FootAndAnkle @h2okeydet

Guys, the DPM I shadow today has offered to write me a general letter of recommendation. He told me to come back next week and shadow 3 more hours, so I will have total of 6 hours with him. Do you guys think I should get that letter?

Not different, just accompanied by additional letters, such as from practicing physicians.

Yes, what's better than not even having to ask?

It was a group of three. The first was the department head and he sat on mostly everyone's committee. The second we were able to choose ourselves, and the third was chosen for us.

Something related to this topic but would I still get an interview even if I have to retake the MCAT?

If first time taking it, schools will put your app on hold until they get the score.

If you took it before, they might give you an interview, depending on what score you have.

What if they didn't like my score would I be able to let them know I am retaking it?

You can indicate that you will retake on your app. Some schools might auto reject you, depending on this low score you mentioned, so make sure that you also call and notify the schools directly as well (better to be safe than sorry).
