sending a cover letter?

is it recommended that i should send a cover letter with my check? it was suggested by my parents but i honestly don't think the adcom's are going to receive the letter directly and also i doubt it really helps because they have everything they need in my application. am i wrong here? i think it seems desperate.

Its not required. I didn't send one but I have read on SDN that some sent a short letter saying thank you for considering their application ,etc. Its really up to your liking, seems like you just want to mail the check.
