Sending in Deposit and deciding NOT to go to that school?

I'm sure it is unprofessional, but I'm deciding that I want to attend a different school other than the school I sent my deposit to. How can I go about doing this? Call the school and ask them that I have changed my mind and ask if they can void the check? Wil this affect me professionally?

That sucks. Sorry you had to pay just to reserve a seat for a few days. Temple is great, ttpharm. Are you going there? The sheer patient volume will make you an excellent practice-ready dentist as opposed to most graduates who may still fear about speed and proficiency.

Give us an example of how this will affect you professionally or just affect you in general. I am super curious.

Do you really think an admission's director is going to be butt hurt if you decline their offer? Honestly, go do whatever the hell you want. It is YOUR MONEY. They won't care if you decline their offer because there are hundreds of applicants who are similar to you and would gladly give an acceptance to them.

Unprofessional? Not the least bit. Let me tell you, you are the customer and you have the right to consumer sovereignty, especially when you are about to pay a large sum of money over the next four years.

It's not unprofessional to change your mind that's is obviously fine. But there is a reason they make you pay a deposit: they are holding the spot for you. If they agree to process a refund, that's nice of them but you should NOT bounce the check by closing the account. Unless they told you there is a "refund period", it is understood that the deposit is lost if you change your mind.

Agreed. It's not unprofessional to choose another school; it IS unprofessional to try and weasel your money back. Ask them nicely for it back and that's that.

You may not be able to get your money back. Some schools specify the deposit is non-refundable before you even pay it. I lost a cool $2000 to UMDNJ to give up my seat to go to Buffalo 4 years ago... (2 deposits of $1k each) $2000 of my own, personal, hard-earned money that was about a month's worth of work to earn... it still hurts.

IF they haven't cashed your check yet, you could put a hold on it at your bank. It might cost you money to do that but will be less than you would have lost if they cash the check, I'm assuming.

Honestly, if you're going to cancel your check like that, it speaks volume of your integrity and character. A deposit is not meant to be refunded, unless otherwise stated!

You apparently dont write your own checks, but you pay your bank a cancellation fee. I'd rather lose $30 over $1000 any day of the week. There are plenty of students out there holding multiple seats, of which the schools will pocket plenty of money when they decide on their #1. I put one deposit down...with my top school.

Kind of like the dentist has plenty of paying patients and he/she is unlikely to miss the money if "I don't pay for the services received".

I do. I just don't do underhanded **** like letting the school cash a bounced check. Do the honest thing.

I agree. You can ask nicely, but after that, (not to sound rude or blunt) but it was up to you to send in that check then anyways. I'm assuming you received all your acceptances on the 3rd (I wasn't lucky like you to have to decide between multiple schools) but I would have waited to make sure that was the school I really wanted to go to before sending in the $1000+ check. For the school I put my deposit down to, it was all done automatically via an e-check.

Just ask nicely and hope for the best. If not, $1000 isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of your life. I'd gladly pay $1000 to go to a school of my choice. It burns a little bit, but it's not horrible. We all learn from our mistakes in life. Good luck, and I hope they're able to refund it for you.

I think the perspective on this comes down to what type of real world experience you have. I have a 1,500 dollar deposit in to hold a seat, but it's not my number 1 choice. The thought of seeing that money go to waste in opting to go elsewhere doesn't hurt so much. I've been working for three years making pretty decent money. I can see where it would sting if you've never had a job and are still in college because you've never had decent cash flow.

My advice, like others, is to politely ask. If they say tough luck, move along. In the grand scheme and long term, it's not a big deal.

I'm all for being frugal but losing an extra 1-2K is nothing to worry about if switching schools is important to you. Write it off as one of MANY MANY costs you'll incur on your way to becoming a dentist. You can ask them to refund the deposit but they most likely won't since when making the deposit, there is one of those "I agree to these terms" things where it clearly states the deposit is non-refundable.

As for changing your mind, there is nothing unprofessional there. So long as you tell them honestly that you decided to go to a different school, they won't mind.

I recently put down my deposit too, if I get an acceptance from a different school I'd like to go to, I'd politely let UCLA know and forget about the deposit...besides public schools in CA can use any extra money they get!

some schools have refundable deposits some dont. if you send in a non-refundable deposit you are agreeing to those terms.

You pay a deposit for the university to hold your seat. final deposits I believe are due in April before matriculating into Ds .

I bet you had seats held in different schools.


I believe the school should keep the money for your deposit. And because of your 'unwanted deposit ' many other students were not given that great letter of acceptance .

The dental world is a small world, call them politely and ask them if they can do this favor for you since you were so overjoyed with all your acceptances and did not know which school to choose until now.

Asking a bank to cancel a check is very unprofessional .

Thanks for all your kind advices. I am just going to leave the deposit there and see if I change my mind by April. Haha. 1000 dollars is really nothing if you look at the grand scheme of things. I really do want to go the school I put my first deposit in, but half of me wants to experience something new.
