It's unethical to send a letter of intent to more than one school, IMO. A letter of intent indicates that you will attend the school if you are accepted. That's not possible at more than one school.
Aside from the obvious consequence of what might happen if you get multiple acceptances as a result of the multiple letters of intent, it's just wrong. Better to send one letter or intent and multiple letters of interest.

I agree with this guy - Letters of interest can be legally binding. So to tell more than one school that you will attend their school if they accept you could put you in hot water if you then turned them down and they decided to pursue it.
Letters of interest where you just tell them how great they are and how well you'll fit there are ok though.
