I have a quick question for all those seniors out there, do you plan to shoot for a 4.0 after that acceptance letter? Or is it straight C's and "I don't care cause I'm in dental school." I know I'll be happy for somewhere in between, maybe B's for the rest of the year, and maybe some fun, pointless classes.

Actually you should be weary of what kind of grades you pull your last semester/quarter. When you apply for specialization schools, they will ask for your undergraduate grades as well as your dental schools in order to accept you.......it does make a difference.

This is true, however, each specialty program is slightly different. Also, they understand that in some instances a slight (dropping from 3.6 to 2.0 is not slight) drop in grades during the application process is unavoidable. I have missed 8 days of class so far on the 6 interviews that I have had and some professors won't let me make up quizes, thus a drop in grades.

i am sorry that your professors have no respect for you future plans and that they care about their quizes more than what you going to do with the things you learn in their class. its very disapointing

go for the straight C's, nothing higher... i' actually have a few classes where i'm pulling an A or B, and i'm begging my teachers to give me a C...

Where does this come into play? I didn't see anybody mentioning anything about professors not caring about future plans (unless I missed it).

I am shooting for half 3.5 and half 4.0, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen because of biochem 👎 😡
okay here goes my rant: i am honestly trying really hard in that class, but i just can't seem to do well on the quizzes & tests. i have never felt like this before in a class in all 4 years i have been in college. i just hope i don't get my admissions revoked or something, if they see a C on my grade update report. not that 1 C is bad, but it would just be a significant drop from my previous grades.
ps. the professor has no control and i am pretty sure i am about the only person in the whole class that doesn't outright cheat on quizzes, so there prob won't even be a curve, and i will get stuck with a low grade cause i refused to cheat... whatever
i feel a little better now...

To the original poster:
I would agree with the others. Have some fun your last semester and take something that strikes your fancy or interests you. I would also strongly suggest that you try to take Biochem if you have not already, as well as Anatomy and Physiology. These classes, while not easy, will prep you for your first year at dental school. , and it will keep a lot of those facts fresh in your mind until you start. It's going to be hectic enough, with uprooting yourself and moving to a new place, so anything you can do to help smooth that transition you will be thankful for. I'm taking BioChem II in the spring, and am going to try to eat that huge elephant called human anatomy one piece at a time over the next eight months. I had it two years ago, and couldn't tell you the muscles I'm using to type this now! Sculpture wouldn't hurt too, and it's lots of fun.

I hear most of ya about the grades dropping! My teachers are the same way -- you miss a quiz, you get a 0. With my interview schedule as it is, i'll be missing 4/10 in one class, so my grades probably won't be an A in that class... 🙁 but hopefully my stats are good enough that they won't care if I pickup a b or two this semester?

But here's MY question that's kinda related: after this fall semester I will only need 7 credits to graduate. Do you think it would look bad if I only took the 7 and just worked more? Or do you think this would be looked down upon...? I just know I"d rather work and earn some money before I get ready to enter the super expensive dental school than take more classes that's going to cost me money 🙂 However, I don't want to through out my chance at specialization before I decided whether or not i'm even interested...

dane,
i would take a full load of credits, but make sure that the 6 or so extra ones are in something relatively light, like psychology or 3D sculpting. that way you have taken a full load of relevant classes, but you don't spend all that much time studying and can still work some (you might even be able to do the little hw you have at work, depending on the job).

Some schools have strict requirements as to what kind of grades you must obtain to still keep your acceptance. When a Pacific rep came to my school last year she said they wanted everyone to have at least "B's" in all their classes or they would make them wait another year to begin school.

im hurting in genetics too (biochem next spring). We have a quiz every friday and i will be missing about 4 too and and on top of that we are working on an abridged semester thanks to hurricane ivan. Oh and exam 2 is the 12th and ill be at TUFTS this aint easy.......
