Separate MD and PhD REsidency Chances?

I realize that people who are in MSTP programs can be at a major advantage when applying to residency programs. Does the same hold true for students who earned a PhD separately? For instance, if someone got a PhD in bioogy or public health and later went to medical school, would they enjoy as much of an advantage in the residency matching process as an MSTP student would?

Possibly, though it depends if (a) their PhD was germane to their medical degree, (b) if they are still interested in academics, (c) what residency they are applying for.
