heck, i went to school down there, and i know how baltimore can be one of the most dangerous cities. but there are some nice spots - so don't watch too much of The Wire.

and in my case, if it comes down to it, my boyfriend is going to UMSOM and i'd relocate for him.

yes, people go to hopkins JUST for hopkins. but others may go to hopkins because it's baltimore. who knows which reason prevails more. let's not try to win arguments with sweeping generalizations. point goes to: JP

I used to live in Whitemarsh. I didnt mind the area...the area around Hopkins isnt the best, but hey...you gotta put up with stuff sometimes. The city has become a bit 'grown in' and busy. Did he go to Hopkins simply because it was Hopkins? Who knows. I went to PCOM because it was PCOM (ok...I lied, it was location!).

In one post here Im arguing the quality of the match list...in another post I am saying its not the end-all-be-all of determining quality.

Cant these Anti-DO people get their arguments straight?

I mean, lets be real here. If youre going to try to formulate an argument against my education at least be consistent.

They should take an osteopathic approach to trying to beat us down. Look at ALL the angles...the mind-body-spirit...or perhaps the MCAT, GPA and Match List. Attack us as a collective group focusing on all areas in order to give us the most comprehensive beating possible. Theyre too 'allopathic' about things. Reacting to our answers and trying to stop bleeding with a band-aid instead of going after the CAUSE of the problem.

Stop being reactionaries and start thinking like a DO and you will be more successful...not just in trying to prove a point but also in helping some patients. Afterall, thats what you should be spending your time worrying about...instead of the DO match list. 👍

"You're so ****ing money and you don't even know it."

I'm so excited to start med school.. I am so bored of this summer BS. Just had a falling-out with my fiance (she can kiss my ass) and I'm just excited for a new start. Orientation is gonna be awesome, but I am so ready to jump into this... screw pessimism. Why the hell does any of this matter? I have a buddy who refused to apply DO and only wants to go to Cornell/Columbia/etc and guess what he's a year behind me and only might get in... as far as I'm concerned, I'll be in the field a year sooner being a doc which has been my dream for as long as I can remember 😀 Not only that, I know that PCOm will prepare me to be an excellent physician because docs in the field have confirmed it... MD and DO.

Besides, PCOM can kick Harvard/Yale/Stanford/Transformer's ass any day.... booooyeah.

😀

My summer job is so mindless it's ridiculous... There is nothing to do in this town. I know medical school is going to be rough but I'm going insane right now haha.

So you aren't in state college then eh? I missed arts fest...very bummed.

Ok... and people match at Johns Hopkins because they want to live in Baltimore?

Nice try.

Ummm....I would. Or at U of Maryland. You don't have to live in the city to work there 🙄

I lived in a nice suburb in Baltimore County and drove to U of Maryland everyday to work, and I would love to work at either of those hospitals in the future.

No I did go to artsfest although I couldn't tell you much about it considering I was obliterated for the majority of the time that I was awake...

It's a shame, I probably needed those brain cells for med school --

I am in florida now so I couldn't go. So many drunk messages it was ridiculous. Then last year I was still in europe...and the year before that I was in europe too. I am a penn state grad and only been to two damn artsfests....

I like where this thread is going by the way.

Does PCOM have a thing for PSU students aside from the fact many of them are from PA so they apply there? I seem to know a ton of them that go to or got into PCOM. I can think of about 6 off the top of my head...

When I was at PCOM for the fin aid workshop, I was walking between Evans and Rowland and began a conversation with an admissions office employee who asked where I went for undergrad. I let her know that I went to Penn State and she said something to the effect of "Oh great just what we need another Penn Stater" and laughed. Apparently, I've been told that there are 20+ Penn Staters per class, although I haven't seen that many on the Class of 2011 facebook group.

Honestly, and I am ashamed to say this, this was my first artsfest. I regret not going before this... And I am pleased to announce that I looked at no art whatsoever lol.

Well, it is hard to go to for some people. Like myself. You never do look at art....summers are such a haze for me when on campus. I have done things in canyon pizza that need not be mentioned on these boards.

It is odd that they have so many penn staters per class...that is a pretty high percentage. Oh well, maybe I stand a shot then. I bet it makes saturdays a little fun if there is a study break though...I am gathering a small band of penn staters here in tallahassee just to watch games.

When I did Teach for America right out of college I worked in a school less than four blocks south on Wolfe St from the main Hopkins hospital campus. I disagree that the whole area is a ghetto. Most of the original housing projects on South Wolfe have been torn down and the Upper Fells Point crowd is slowly migrating further north into the old neighborhoods (Butcher's Hill, Patterson Park, even west Canton). I'd go back in a heartbeat. In fact, being from Maryland, I absolutely hope to return to Baltimore for residency. I'd consider Hopkins first for its location, then for its reputation. But I know that's probably not typical. Lots of other good teaching hospitals in the city, too. And I do know of more than one D.O. (both from PCOM) currently in residency at JH, although one works in the Bayview campus.

I agree that, overall, I think you'll find more people applying to specific residencies because of location (they want to be close to home, they're tied to a spouse/significant other, they have a strong desire to be in a particular city) than you would people who would indiscriminately join a residency program in any part of the country if the quality rankings were high enough.
