I am applying to medical school this cycle after completing my first gap year doing Americorps. I heard that some schools like UMich and Duke specifically ask about Americorps experience. I'm really passionate about service and I'm looking to build my school list around schools that value Americorps/service so I was wondering if there were any other schools like this. Not only will this increase my chance of acceptance, but I just want to be at a school where I can continue to pursue service. Thanks!

I also did Americorps and created a school list based on similar criteria! Here are a few that I applied to that really emphasized service:

Vermont
Temple
Rush
BU
Cooper Rowan (if you’re from NJ)
Tufts
UChicago

I will say that many schools highly value service, especially if you can reflect on and be insightful about your experiences in your app.
I had a very service-oriented app (and not much research) and I think that my cohesive narrative helped me be successful this cycle.

Thanks for this list and the advice! I'm not from NJ, but I already had all of the other schools on my list except for Vermont which I will definitely look into. Good luck in med school!

The Jesuit Schools value programs like Americorps. I know people that did City Year, Peace Corps and Americorps. Rush expects and gets hundreds of service hours in general from their applicants. Just the fact that you’ve done this will be impressive to ADCOMS. Good luck.

Yes, Americorps experience will help your application as would Peace Corps. I would ask the schoolsif they have students who did Americorps. I also think there is an alumni network.

Tulane, SLU, and UChicago are 3 that come to mine. Also, the HBCU med schools. Not sure your race, but the non-Black students at those schools (usually 15-30% depending on school) are the ones very passionate about serving marginalized communities.
