I'm just curious as to how many members here have ever set a curve in a science class and- specify if needed-include details like subject, class size, class average, etc. Poll incoming.

For classes with large enrollment at my institution, the curve is never set by a single score. Although I certainly have been part of the leading few scores, or "pack of scores" used set to curve, to my knowledge I have never solely set the curve. A single score setting the curve seems very high school-ish, for lack of a better word, to me. I do recall setting the curve multiple times in psych 101, but in each case there is no way of knowing if I had the single highest score or if others had equally high scores as myself.

Most of my upper division coursework (class size < 50 usually) has never been curved. By this time you either know your stuff or you don't.

What does it mean for a person to "set the curve"? A curve is created by adjusting grades to fit a predetermined bell-curve distribution. All of the scores in the class are involved in "setting the curve."

I took my paramedic classes at a community college. In A+P 1, our final lab practical was a bit of a blood bath - most people (including myself) had never had a test like this before, and didn't know how to prepare for it. I got a 93 on the test... Class average was a 60 or something. After a 20 point scale I ended up with a 113. There were only ~25 students in the class.

I remember at one point in this class, a student complained about some detail that the teacher expected us to know: "we aren't going to be doctors". I didn't say anything...

Taking exam #3 was required to pass/get a grade in the class, but based on the curve on that one, I needed like a 10-15% to still get an A in the class.


I think that is the only time I've been even remotely close to the top on a large class test given my gross lack of caring about grades through HS/undergrad/medical school.

Taking exam #3 was required to pass/get a grade in the class, but based on the curve on that one, I needed like a 10-15% to still get an A in the class.

This thread makes me remember my sophomore physics class. The final exam was take-home, and you had 2 weeks to do it. Top of the class was 23 out of 100 (happened to be me). I ended up receiving an A+ for the class, which made me very proud - even until today.

It was one test out of what, 20+? You remember the things that stick out like that. It was all quantum mechanics and stuff I'd studied already a couple of times. I'm pretty sure most of the Physics majors did extremely well on it.

Guess my age is showing but some 30 years ago, in a very large SUNY school, I do not recall a class where there wasn't a curve. Gen Chem, Organic, Physics, Biochem, Calc, even my small PChem class. The Biochem was the worst as it was an upper level UG class, a first year grad class, and part of the year included medical students. The prof was from the medical school, a ball buster, on the adcom, and kind of had a thing against good researcher types who applied straight MD.

My biochem professor never curved anything because "grades shouldn't matter," bless his heart. He was like "If you get a 94 in this class, you'll get an A. There might be some wiggle room." So I got a 93.97 in his class and he gave me an A-.

"Wiggle room" is universally known as 0.02%, duh!

In college, I set the curve in General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Genetics, Stats, and possibly Calc3, but range wasn't published for that class, so I'm just assuming that a 99 was at or close to the top. Averages for these classes were Bs. Class sizes were large for the three science classes, medium for the math classes (relative to class sizes at my school). My official transcript actually says I was at the top of my class for General Chem and Genetics. For organic I only set the curve on later tests and so while I got an A in the class, my poor/mediocre performance on the earlier tests meant I wasn't at the top of the class overall.

Does calc 2 count? Class average was just under 60, but my grade was a few points above 100 (professor gave a bonus question or two on every exam/quiz). IMO the only reason I did so well is because I had already learned all the material in my high school calc class.

The average 4 year undergrad GPA for our science school is 2.9. That makes me feel much better about my 3.5. All you have to do is beat the average right?

There weren't 700 people in my entire college freshman class.

Yeah, we were small, and everyone knew how everyone else scored on everything. I can confidently say that if you ignore the writing score, I was in a two way tie for the highest MCAT score in my college class. Sadly for us that wasn't particularly impressive. A kid in the class behind me took the MCAT as a sophomore and scored like 6 points higher than me. Still, between my school being respected and being in a favorable state bordered by another favorable state, I think every single person who scored a 27 or higher got in within a year of graduation to an LCME school.
